Out of my league, but am I out of bounds for doing so?

On a good day, I'm Cat 2 pack fodder. I race as an excuse to hang out with large numbers of bike people with no serious consideration given to podium finishes. This year, I really want to race on my singlespeed as a personal challenge more than anything. My local race series has a SS category that's lumped in with Men's Open and Women's open, with Cat 1, 2, and 3 below that. I am NOT an open category racer, but in a moment of stupidity, I signed up for the singlespeed category for this year's opening race. I don't mind being laughed at for finishing last, but I don't want a bunch of guys pissed at me for delaying the awards ceremony, either. Do I need to change categories (if possible), or am I overthinking this?

I think you're overthinking it. It depends on your area really. I've been to SS races where I kept up just fine and I've been blown away off the line at others.

Either way sounds like you'll be fine.

Don't forget you can always race your category with a single speed...

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm overthinking this.

Sprocket, I could race Cat 2 on the SS, but the open categories get more laps and better/longer courses for some events this year, so I think I'm staying there to play at the back of the pack. That's what piqued my interest initially, so I guess I'll stay where I signed up.
