    Help with Recurring Illness

    Hoping someone has seen something like this before. Here is the situation, I have something recurring in my system. My symptoms are

    20-30% decrease in power across the board per Quarq power meter
    FTP 271, have difficulty maintaining 200 watts during outbreak

    Inability to raise HR even in race conditions
    Typical HR during a race run is 172-178 BPM, illness can't get over 155 BPM

    Severe fatigue

    If I do an antibiotic regiment for 10 days everything goes back to normal, but then within 10-20 days the cycle returns. I have been diagnosed with a recurring sinus staph infection, but not sure this is the only issue. Anyone experienced something like this? Could the staph infection be causing these symptoms or is there something else they are missing?

    I can't speak to the potential for a staph infection/performance decrease relationship. I do know about sinus infections. Have you seen an actual ENT and had a CT scan to see if your anatomy is ok? If you are getting 4 or more sinus infections a year I'd guess you have something restrictive in your sinus ostia and/or in your nasal passages. Something like balloon sinuplasty possibly paired with some FESS could be done in the ENS's office in under an hour with only valium and percocet (no anesthesia) and average back to work time is 1.5 days

    I would say that during/after a round of antibiotics (like say a z-pack) my numbers are definitely NOT where they'd ordinarily be. I'm not smart enough to know if it's the antibiotics or the fact that I was sick enough to need them - most likely both but anecdotes be anecdotes.

    I would say that there are times to race and train and then there are times to get healthy, I think for you this the latter time.

    A recurring infection is a problem you want to address. I would both seek more medical advice and significantly reduce the training strain.

    I've had recurring sinus infections in past years and can relate to your symptoms. Those seem typical of a sinus infection, allergy, virus or bacterial, doesn't matter. Get a correct diagnosis and stop taking antibiotics unless confirmed as bacterial, they will just weaken your immune system.

    Is the antibiotic cycle 10 days, or is that just what are you doing?

    Something does not sound right with this. Especially the recurrent staph sinus infection part. Get a proper second opinion.

    Read this book. It's old. But it works 100% of the time on 100% of the people who follow it. I had the same symptoms for years. Just remember that some of the symptoms may take quite some time to recover from. I spent decades trying to discover the answers, so this isn't just some quick answer. I can post other references if need be. But they all pivot on the principles in this book. Just google Arnold Ehret mucusless diet pdf. It's online.
    Note to self: 85% of FTP for 20 min.

    I said the same. And I suffered 20 years longer than I needed. The "medical" realm. What have they demonstrated? They're still selling medicine for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure. Still doing coronary bypass surgery. Those are trivial to reverse. I'm not asking anyone to believe anything. I don't believe. I look for proof in demonstration. Look at Dr. Campbell's China Study. Or watch Forks Over Knives. All I can say is my high blood pressure, migraines, exhaustion, kidney failure are all gone from simply using the diet this species was designed to use.

    When we've been indoctrinated, the truth sounds like nonsense. That's all I'll say. I've learned that it takes different amounts of suffering before people are willing to look for answers.

    Totally off topic at this point, but I'll bite. First off, I'm very glad that this diet has worked for you. Having less arbitrary suffering in this world is always a good thing.

    That said, if you think modern medicine hasn't done much for humans, then perhaps you should look at what's currently happening with the anti-vaxxers and measles and smallpox making a comeback.

    Also, "simply using the diet this species was designed to use": Diet varies dramatically by culture and region. While it's probably fair to say that we've spent an exceedingly short amount of time evolutionarily in the modern western food landscape, there's not really one diet that we've globally consumed. Interestingly, it would be reasonable to expect that if our food landscape remains constant for the next reasonable timespan (say 10k to 50k years), that we'd be pretty well adapted to our current diets.

    Anyways, yes, the diet worked for you. And the small sample of people from those books/documentaries. But, there are VERY real problems with say people getting very sick on vegan diets. Every person is different, and responds differently. So, my original gripe with your post was thinking this diet is a 100% panacea. It's not. Nothing is. But it may be useful.

    As someone posted above, get tested for Lyme to at least rule it out. If any bands come back positive one CDC test follow up with another lab; I've used Igenex.

    I just saw something on Overtraining symptom. Google it and see if your symptoms match up with it. I got nothing else, just read and article about it in runner's world or somewhere.

    Hi Salespunk, I wonder what the cause is? The infection or the fatigue? Is the infection alone enough to cause the fatigue and weakness that you describe OR, is the fatigue causing increased susceptibility to infection. [edit] Either way, what's the root cause is? What's the reason behind either the infection or the fatigue? [edit]

    Either way, your body is telling you that it's not happy with you. Let me say that again: your body is telling you that it's not happy with you. I suggest that you listen to it and that you change your goals. Perhaps your current goal should shift from racing to getting health & simply participating in the this great activity of MTB'ing?

    As background, I didn't listen to my body, I ignored it a couple of years, and badly for 12 months...and I now have chronic fatigue. I'm doing well if I spend 30 minutes three times per week pedaling around the local streets...


    I'd do all of the following:
    - seek specialist medical opinions (which specialist does one see for infections?)
    - check your diet with professionals
    - try to avoid caffeine and stimulants
    - get lots of sleep
    - reduce stress
    - be mindful
    - meditate
    - avoid screens close to bed time, especially smart phones & tablets, close to bed time
