I bought a set of Avid BB7's for my cargo bike, and they work like a charm, easy to install and maintain, and very reasonable. You will need cable actuated levers so don't forget. Good luck with your bike!

I've been out of the game in terms of disc brakes do you have a good suggestion? I'm looking to keep it under 200 bucks for a set but of course would love to go lower. I am an xc rider and weigh 140-150 lbs depending on how much I pork out. I definitely do not descend aggressively. Thanks!

You missed out on Ribble with a set of SLX for $96. Out of stock now.

Yep great price for those brakes. I have a set on my SS and they have been flawless.

Pick up a set of Shimano Hydros SLX or better.

Lots of tutorials on how to shorten the hoses on youtube.

    Really easy.

They are great brakes indeed, but I haven't been able to find a good price on them in quite a while. It's tough to justify paying almost the same price as SLX, when in the past, I've picked them up for as cheap as 77 bucks for the pair. Sadly those days are gone.

Hard to give suggestions without knowing if you're building a $800 bike or a $5000 bike.

If its the former, Jensonusa has the M396 Shimano brakes for $32/wheel.

Agree with most of the comments above regarding Shimano disc brakes. They are all I ride anymore and have tried most other brands. Plenty of good deals on Shimano discs but mostly from UK sites. I only have experience on the Shimano Zee's, XT and XTRs but hear the SLX's are every bit as good. Remember you will need to order rotors separately. At your weight and riding style you can probably get away with 6" rotors non-Ice Tech but I would still recommend going for 7" front. I'm 200 lbs and tend to descend aggressively and run 7" Ice-Tech rotors front and rear and love them.

Shimano XT M8000 (the latest version) for $89.99 per brake (free shipping to the US): wiggle.com | Shimano Deore XT BR-M8000 Brake Lever and Caliper | Disc Brakes

Shimano SLX M7000 (also latest version) $74.99 per brake (also free shipping on orders over $99): Shimano SLX M7000 Disc Brake | Chain Reaction Cycles

    Shimano XT 7" Ice Tech rotors $31 per rotor: wiggle.com | Shimano XT RT86 Ice-Tec 180mm 6-Bolt Rotor | Disc Brake Rotors

You can get some deals on the previous models as well which are still great brakes but getting harder to find. If you would prefer shopping thru US sites, Blueskycycling usually has some good Shimano deals as well. For example, they have the previous model of the Shimano SLX discs for $140 for the set (rotors not included): https://www.blueskycycling.com/produ..._Brake_Set.htm

Here's a set of m8000's for $148, but youll need to swap levers, as is the case from most european vendors.

Yeah, that's per wheel. GuitsBoy quoted for the pair for less than $150.
