Do a search for Leader Bikes. My buddy got one for $99. A decent aluminum frame for the $!

Check ebay. Ediscountbike has some hardtails for $40 that look okay. Also there are some fetish cycles frames for $70 on ebay.
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

There is a steel frame on universalcycles for under $100, called phobia or something.

Let me know (or post here) how you like the frame, if you end up buying it. google also turned up one more hit for that frame (check www.bikeroom.com, under frames). They have a pic of the build up bike (looks neat).

Does that frame look like a KHS to anyone else?

Yes indeed it does. Universal Cycles used to sell a similar looking frame out of the same tubing called the Wild West. Back then, many speculated that it too was an KHS and was maybe an old inventory buyout of some sort.

Nashbar has a $110 alum hardtail frame. If you have the 20% coupon promotion, then it'll be around $88.
