Hello, which is the best all around tire (650b) for a trip I am going in MOab (Whole Enchilada, etc), Fruita and Telluride (base)? I have a on my SC Solo Maxxis HR II which are heavy and bought Schwalbes Rocket Rons for my home trails....I was thinking on maybe using Hans Dampf or Nobby Nics (Schwalbes) for the trip or maybe Maxxis Ardent?
I bought a pair of Ardent 26x2.4 EXO's for Moab at the beginning of the year. The pair added over a pound to my bike. I ride Park City, where the first 8 miles is usually a 3000 foot climb. I like them so much that I kept them on the bike (had run RaRa 2.25 rear, NoNi 2.4 front). They were great, for me, in Moab. On Slickrock, prior to the main loop, you drop into a small sandy wash and up an angled step on the other side. This was the first time I cleaned that in both directions on the first attempt. I run them tubeless.
For Moab, something durable would outweigh (no pun intended) weight for tires. It's super rocky there. I had great performance with my Minion DHF 2.5 and High Roller 2.35. Both UST. (26" however so doesn't really help, although I trust Maxxis for terrain like Moab).
Slickrock IMO is not the true tire test. Trails like Porc Rim and Mag 7 are though. Amazing to see the shear number of people with flats along the way down Porc rim trail.
The point that Slickrock isn't a good test is quite true, though there are a couple of spots that are. They also worked well for me on Amasa Back, Rock Stacker, Jackson, Ahab, Porc rim from LPS down, Baby Steps (Mega Steps, etc) and Sovereign. And, they fairly floated through the sand.
The best tires for Moab are ones you either found in a dumpster, or will throw out soon!
