Smoother ride 29" wheel with 2.5" wide tires or 27.5" wheel with 2.8" tire

Which wheel set up provides the smoothest ride => a 29" wheel with 2.5" wide tires or a 27.5" wheel with a 2.8" wide tire?

i am looking for the best set up for a bad lower back.

Just picked up my first plus bike hardtail and I'm amazed by how compliant the big tires make. I'm slowly taking it to places I used to put my 160 mm FS bike too.

I think a lot of this will come down to how you setup your bike and what type of terrain you ride....

I rode my Hightower with both setups DHF/DHR2 and the 2.8 were a lot smoother.
