    Life expectancy of stock wheels for large Clyde

    Problem is i got a new bike with 20mm thru maxl in front and 142+ in the rear and my current hand buit wheels wont fit the new bike. So I'm wondering how long I can ride on my new stock wheels before I have to have a new hand built set made.

    Background: I have been riding on a hand built wheel set (Kings/Flows DB DT Swiss 36 spoke count) for the last three years and they've been bomb proof for my 6'6" 285lbs frame. The front hub will only convert to a 15mm thru so those wheels are out. I believe King makes spacers for a 135 to 142 conversion but I think I'll use these wheels on a cheap SS frame build up.

    Here's what came stock on my new Stumpjumper FSR Expert Evo 29er bike.
    RIMS Roval Traverse 29, alloy disc, 28mm, 32h
    FRONT HUB Roval Traverse 29, 20mm thru-axle caps, 32h
    REAR HUB Roval Traverse 29 142+, 12mm thru-axle, 32h
    SPOKES DT Swiss Super Comp, 2.0/1.65/1.8 stainless

    Does anyone have experience with these wheels? How will they hold up to a large Clyde's abuse? The spokes feel sort of flimsy. The rim looks to be decent quality and I don't know anything about the rear hub.

    I'd sell the stock wheels, convert the rear to 142mm, and have a matching front wheel built. Better this than destroying the stock wheelset that you can probably sell for enough to pay for what you need.

    I'm about 220-230 and when I bought my Camber Expert the shop said "sell the stock rims ASAP while they are worth something" I was able to get about $225 or so for them and put on some Mavic Crosstrails.
    Hardrock 29er, Niner EMD9, Cannondale F29, Camber Expert, 650b Nickel all gone.
    2014 Giant Anthem 27.5 here.

    Did you sell the wheels with the tires?

    I'm using the Purgatory 29" x 2.2" on my Sun Ringle Charger wheels which have a very similar rim to the Flow (similar width and uses BST) and they work GREAT tubeless on these rims. So personally I would keep the tires.

    Think about having your wheels rebuilt with double butted 2.0/1.8/2.0 spokes (DT-S Comp, Wheelsmith DB14, Sapim Race). They should then be all you need for a long time.

    @4slomo,

    Are you saying I'd be fine with using the same rims and hubs and just swapping out the spokes with the ones you mentioned above? Will a 32 spoke count be enough you think?

    Going from Super Comps to Comps isn't going to suddenly make these wheels (big) Clyde Proof...they don't make that much of a difference.
