New question here. Hub Problems: Novatec D882SB

    Hello!

Okay, I'm pretty new to the MTB world and not fully versed on terminology, so advanced apologies if I sound like a dumdum.

    Relevant information for coming queries:
    • Hub: Novatec D882SB
    • Crankset: Shimano CS-M7000-11
    • Bike had been garaged for over a year prior to purchase

I bought a relatively lightly used 2017 Vitus Sentier VRX the other day. Test drove it with the original owner, seemed fine, paid and went home, but on my first ride the hub starting skipping as I pedaled and after about ten minutes just stopped turning the wheel altogether. I did some research and took it apart and it seems the ring that held the pawls in place had broken and the pawls were worn a bit. Everything else seems to be okay. My questions are as follows:
    • Is this possibly something I caused, did the original owner cover it up somehow just for the sale of the bike, or is this a total coincidence?
    • At $450 is this a lemon? I got the impression it was a good deal, but Vitus bikes aren't that common in California as far as I can tell.
    • Can I purchase just the ring and pawl kit to repair the freehub?
    • This hub appears to be discontinued, if I need to replace the freehub entirely are the sizes fairly standardized? What part would fit? How do I find this out for future reference?
    • Lastly, when I took the wheel off, the bolt that holds the cassette stack on the hub was only finger tight and upon removal the cassette came free from the hub with the freehub still attached as seen in the picture. Have I screwed something up further? (Note that I took this picture after some cleaning, I have the liberated fourth pawl and the broken piece of the retaining ring)

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated, it's great to be a part of this community!

    Thanks,
    John

    Looks like a coverup imo.
I personal know 2 ppl with busted pawls on novatec hubs.
I would do a careful thorough check on the bike for other possible issues.
