    Ease of swapping drivers/cassettes?

    Here is the scenario.

Bike #1 - SRAM drivetrain (XO Eagle)
Wheel set #1 - DT Swiss 240s, XD driver, SRAM cassette

Bike #2 - Shimano drivetrain (XT)
Wheel set #2 - DT Swiss 350s, HD driver, Shimano cassette

How easy/quick would it be to swap the free hubs and cassettes to be able to use wheel set #1 on bike #2, and wheel set #2 on bike #1? Is this something that can be done in 10-15 minutes the night before a big ride?

If this is going to be a PITA, it may be a reason for me to change directions here and build bike #2 with a SRAM drivetrain and order wheel set #2 with an XD driver. I don't want to, but I want to be able to swap wheel sets.

    Thanks guys.

Swap the freehubs between the 240 and 350 would be easy and fast, but, how many gears have each of the setups?
If they have the same number it is possible that's you just need to swap the freehub, and worst case scenario you may need the adjust the limits.
But why don't you try it?

12 speed SRAM, 11 speed Shimano.

The Eagle derailleur is a PITA to keep in proper adjustment as it is. I do not want to be screwing with it anymore than I have to.

I can't try it because I don't have Bike #2 built yet, and I am on the brink of ordering wheel set #2 and have to decide on a driver.

The cassette swaps will take a handful of seconds. The big problem is the 12s RD/shifter on one bike and the 11s RD/shifter on the other. You arenít going to magically get 12 usable gears out of an 11s XT shifter simply because you put a 12s cassette on the bike.

I would be swapping cassettes too. Drivers and cassettes. From wheel set to wheel set. Not from bike to bike. The 12 speed gruppo will remain with Bike #1. Only the wheel set will change, which will entail swapping the cassette and driver back and forth between wheel sets #1 and #2.

I think I would always have the 11 speed shifter (and derailleur and chain) matched with the 11 speed cassette. And the 12 speed shifter (and derailleur and chain) with the 12 speed cassette.

The issue is...am I going to be able to do this the night before a ride without cursing?

Yes. Do you know how to pull the cassette and driver off a DT hub?

Itís a 30 second operation to swap cassettes/drivers been two star ratchet wheels.

Embarrassingly, I donít know how to do that. But it sounds like it is something I am capable of learning quite easily and doing without too much of a headache. Which is awesome because this is the way I would much prefer to go.

    This is perfect actually.

    Thank you.

    Remove wheel from bike.

    Place on ground.

Place fingers of both hands between cassette and spokes. Wedge them in.

Move your finger tips towards you. It should pop off with a bit of force.

Thank you for your help. I will now order my new wheelset.

If I may trouble you for one more thing, the XD and HD drivers for the 240 and 350 are interchangeable, correct? In other words, if I already own a wheelset with 240s and an XD driver, I can order a second wheelset with 350s and an HD driver and be able to swap the drivers back and forth, correct?

    Yep.

The drivers, end caps, springs and star ratchets are interchangeable between all DT Swiss star ratchet MTB hubs. 180, 190, 240, 350, 440.

Hell, you can even use everything but the end cap on a non-disc DT road bike hub, too.
