54t DT Swiss rachets: 3 years and 3 months of wear.

Some people on the forums have been questioning the durability of the 54t DT swiss ratchets, so I took some pictures after 3 years of wear and tear. I weigh 155 pounds, prefer to mash rather than spin, and these ratchets are on an XC hardtail. Mileage is unknown but this is what they look like.

The only major wear that can be seen is that the leading edge of the teeth are starting to flatten out, other than that, there are also a couple of small nicks/chipping. When its time to replace, I will go with the 36t ratchets.

How is the sound of the 54t vs. 36t?

Do you maintain them? I always thought it was a maintenance issue, the higher tooth count would be less tolerant of wrong grease and less upkeep.

3yrs is very good wear out of the 54T ratchet. Typically we're seeing about 15-18months or about 6000km from users through our workshop. The 36T ratchet in my 240S is 11yrs old (probably over 20,000km)and only now looking like your 54T racthet teeth. They're being replaced in December when I replace the 18T in my Cannondale Hollowgram Ai hub

I replaced the stock 18t ratchets with the 54t, so I do not have a personal experience with your question. I can tell you that the 54t is much louder than the 18t, especially when the grease gets old!

This is not the only bike I ride so maintenance would vary but I would clean and re-grease with the DT Swiss red grease every two months or when the ratchets started getting loud.

I have one set of 54's that are a couple of years old, two sets of 36's and some 18's. All have been quite durable. Some of my friends complain that the 54's are super loud... I don't really notice them when riding. I swapped 36's in on that bike and they are noticeable quieter.
