29er Tires for commuting to work and some mtn biking.

Is there a tire that I can use on my Air9 to commute to work and ride up some trails after work without tearing up the threads to badly? I don't want a Street tire but something in between. Low resistance yet good on both terrains.

    Thanks in advance

I've been using Spec Ground Controls that came on my bike just for this purpose. They are proving to be very durable and working well as an all-around tire. Definitely not the best on rolling resistance, but cant complain for an off-road tire being used on pavement.

In doing some research, the Kenda Small Block has been highly recommended. May want to take a look into those.

+1 for the Small Block Eights. I commute an trail ride with little issue. I'm building a second front to mount a Ralph on when the trails are too soft. Otherwise, SB8s are a good fast rolling tire. Just stay out of the mud.

Thanks all. I'm really leaning towards the Small block 8 but noticed they don't make a Tubeless / UST version of it in 29". Any recommendations on a tubeless ready 29er for the same purpose?

I'm running them tubeless on my Niner. Stans Arch EX.

+1 for the Kenda Small Block Eights. Not the best off road tires but they have low rolling resistance for pavements, they are fairly firm rubber so they won't wear down as fast as some other tires and fast on smooth single track and gravel. Absolute crap on wet/mud and on roots and rocks.

Another option would be the Maxxis Ikon exo. That work well on Stans. The Small Black 8's are next to impossible to setup tubeless with any reliability.

I love the Ikons but they dont hold up well to pavement riding.

Kenda DTC Small Block 8s would be a good recommendation but you'll still burn through a set or two a year. Have always figured that a Slant Six up front and SB8 out back would be a killer compromise setup for riding road and minimizing drag.
