2.4 Nobby Nic and 2.35 Maxxis Ardent - Which One in Front? Which One in Rear?

I currently have a 2.4 Nobby Nic on the front and a 2.35 Maxxis Ardent on the rear of my XL Trek Paragon (hardtail 29er). I was running a Racing Ralph on the rear and when it died I only had a couple days to replace it before a planned weekend ride in Brown County State Park.

I ride midwest singletrack - hard over loose, some roots and rocks, leading into leaf and snow season.

Stans Arch EX wheels front and back.

Is either tire particularly better suited for front or rear use? I may switch out the rear tire next summer when things get dry and dusty AND if I have any racing on the agenda.

I had an Ardent on the front and didn't like it. Almost bite the dust two times before I swapped it for a Magic Mary.
I have an Ardent on the rear and it's not that bad, but isn't exceptional.
I did run NN front and rear some time before, definitely better than the Ardent.
