    Test of Metal advice

    Hey all,

Im looking for some hydration/ food advice for the upcoming Test of Metal.
How many water bottles do most riders carry? (I overheat with camelbacks)
also how much and what type of food do you carry?
Are there lots of feed stations or just a couple?

Ive been doing some sport class races in the Seattle Area that are about half the distance as the TOM and have the pace of that distance down pretty well, I do need to get out on a few longer rides in the next few weeks to prepare.

    Thanks Matt

    Here's the course map

There's 3 feed zones, but you pass one twice, so four effectively. The first one is about where most XC races end around 34km. A few years ago a couple of hundred of riders came down with some bacterial bug from the mud in one section, likely from mud on the water bottles (more likely than the mud off the front tire), so hopefully it will be a dry race condition.

    and the elevation profile

those might help you judge what you might need. Your energy intake will likely rise sharply once you go past your typical 90-120 minute race period as you'll be using up all your glycogen stores in the muscles beyond that, and you'll be feeding the muscles directly. If you're used to riding those epic rides, you could scale up your intake based on what you need for regular paced long rides.

What was your finishing time? I see that they had problems with their scoring system so there's no results posted yet.

I was mid-pack, I cramped early (before the big climb) and was caught by surprize in the first section of the plunge (went over the bars twice) next time -lower the seat.

    finished in about 3:56

Where did you end up Rocky?

I'm too old and crunchy to race, I hurt enough after leisure rides.
