BC wildfires, air quality and trail closures

Anybody planning a bike trip to BC soon will want to keep an eye on the wildfire situation as it will have a big effect on air quality and trail closures in many areas until we get some rain. Right now Whistler has the worst air quality in the province, it was literally off the charts yesterday. The chart goes to 11 and it was somewhere north of 16. The big fire in Pemberton is certainly impacting that area.

Open fire bans are in effect in all camping areas, and many areas have trail closures because all it would take is one lightning strike to put trail users in the middle of a big wildfire. They are expecting 30 new wildfires per day to start right now.

Some riding areas are off limits all together, check before you come!
As for Whistler; today was better, I rode the bike park for a couple hours and it was totally fine.

It's much worse in Vancouver today, we're up to 5. It's likely going to keep changing and affecting new areas of the province while fires come and go and winds shift, or until we get some rain. Quite a few of the trails on the Island are closed as they are on forest company land.

That huge inrush of people into Whistler for Crankworx will be a cause of stress for the fire management people, like any big event, people tend to get careless in a big group. The Pemberton and Squamish music festivals will likely be giving the fire management people night sweats.

Hopefully the air is good for the Ironman Canada July 26! Hate for my wife to have to do the race in the smoke!

A photo of the Elaho Valley/Boulder Creek fire near Pemberton. This is the biggest reason Whistler has so much smoke. That was taken from a plane at 30,000 ft flying in from Prince George
