All Seasons Trail Plan for West Bragg Creek

All Seasons Trail Plan for West Bragg Creek

Itís no secret that the existing trails around the West Bragg Creek area are not great for mountain biking. They are most often muddy and rutted and are not terribly exciting for us bikers. The trails ended up this way mostly by design as the entire network was originally developed over 25 years ago as winter use only with a focus on cross country skiing.

The CMBA, in partnership with the Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association, Alberta Parks, SRD, and other recreational and industrial user groups, are looking at the problems of the existing area and are working on a long term plan for the development of an all-seasonal, multi-use trail network centred on the West Bragg Creek day use area.

The committee has created a first draft of the plan that includes proposals to bring certain existing winter trails up to summer use standards as well as proposals on a network of new summer use trails throughout the area.

The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association in partnership with Alberta Parks (Kananaskis Country) is hosting a public open house on a Proposed All Season Plan for the West Bragg Creek Trail System at the Bragg Creek Community Centre on Thursday, Nov. 26th from 4 until 8 pm. Everyone is welcome. At the open house, you can see the planned all-season networks drawn out on maps, look over lists of trails that will be improved, and talk to committee members who took part in the planning process. Representatives from all different types of recreational and industrial user groups will be available to talk to.

As mountain bikers, we need your input! Please come by and see our maps and ideas, and share your thoughts with us. We want to hear what you think! If you canít make it in person, we'll post links to the maps and draft plan once the GBCTA releases them, so keep an eye on the CMBA website. You can forward any input to us via email or through the CMBA forum, and we will make sure it gets to the planning committee.

These are exiting times to be a mountain biker in Calgary! Great new things are happening in our future, and you can be a part of that and have your say! So speak up and tell us how we can make West Bragg one of the best mountain biking destinations in the Calgary area! See you all at the open house...

For more info, contact Eric Lloyd at [email protected] or telephone (403) 949-2696.

The Bragg Creek Community Centre is located at 23 White Avenue, Bragg Creek AB.

So this is the Telephone Loop and connected areas? That's pretty cool since the squishy ground was always a common problem except in the middle of a hot dry summer. I haven't ridden Telephone loop since '89 or '90.

Yes, that's the area we're talking about. An effort is being made to connect trailheads, and the stacked-loop concept is in full effect. Also, there is a general preference for trails to follow ridge-tops where possible, as it reduces the impact on wildlife and the watershed, and they drain much faster than those along the valley floor. The plan really takes into account mountain biking, with trails of varying distance and elevation gain. The CMBA is named as a partner for developing the trail sytem.

That's a nice recognition of the value of mountain biking to the Bragg Creek area. The T-Loop was always handy for an after work ride as the days got shorter and there was no time to fit a Kananskis ride in before dark. The biggest nuisance was having to manage the cattle gates and the swampy sections with lots of that green cow mud stuck to your water bottle. I remember being thrilled when someone introduced those water bottle cap covers to keep them clean (right up there with the Flex Stem on my Mongoose IBOC Pro).

    x-post from PB:

The GBCTA site is http://trails.braggcreek.ca/. The individual docs are:
    Executive Summary
    Draft Plan
Comment Form [e-mail it to [email protected] after filling it out].

Thanks to everyone who took the time to drop by. It was great to see so many mtn bikers out - we were definitely the majority of attendees at the open house. The next step is to fill out and submit the comment form - it's the best way to ensure cycling is well-represented in this plan. If you have any questions about what's going on, feel free to drop me a line. Thanks!
