    Pimp My Ride!

    Hey all you weight weenies!

I recently built up a hardtail just as a change of pace from my normal FS ride. And, much to my surprise, I think it is actually more fun! I think this is partly because it is such light bike. So, I think this will be next summer's race bike, and now I'm curious as to what I might do to make it even a little bit lighter.

It's OK light at 22 pounds, but I wonder if there's any obvious improvements you all would do to it? I weight 190 pounds and plan on racing this on all but the roughest of courses, so both light weight and durability are important...any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance
    Tom

    Nice bike! Any pics?

I would start with trying some Foam grips, I used to swear by Oury grips, even the lock-ons, then I tried foam

If you have the option of spacers above your stem, consider a Sytnace F99 stem. Will save about 100grams right there!

If you don't need the full 410mm length of the thompson, then you could cut it down. Maybe also consider a Masterpeice? Probably not worth the money IMO.

Replace the flip-lock with a bolt type clamp.

    Have you tried egg beaters??

Don't take this the wrong way, because I weigh 180, but at 190 you don't want to lighten it up much more. You might start experiencing some high speed wobble that might effect your race.

I shall be an ass yet again

That bike sounds killer. Especially if you're going to race on some pretty hard courses, leave the bike as it is. After a year of seeing stuff crack, break, come loose and fail in every other way possible, I say reliability ├╝ber alles. What you've got now is bombproof and light enough!

other than a Syntace stem, there is not a thing that seems worth it to me to fuss with.....you could probably lose about 90 grams for about $40 after buying the new F99 stem and ebaying your current one....seems worth it

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try the stem recommendation, get some foam grips, and get a bolt-on seat clamp.

Also, I'm not super fond of the fork, and this SID is one I pulled off bike last year because I didn't really like it. Everybody knows SIDS are a bit flexy. I suppose stiffer forks all weigh quite a bit more eh?

Also since this bike has turned me into a bit of a weight weenie I'm a little annoyed with the weight of Shimano pedals. I've tried eggbeaters but didn't like them because they have too much float and hence are too slow to get out of (for me). Do weight weenies have a favorite pedal other than eggbeaters?

Lastly I picked up this frame on over the summer Ebay for $175. What a deal. Yeah I know it's a 2002 frame but it was unused...and what a great frame! I'm now a fan of Salsa, and also of buying a frame off ebay and building them up...

Here's the photo y'all asked for. I took it right after I built it up just for insurance purposes, so I didn't worry about the setting...

Same thing here, I thought my eggs had too much float. Have you looked at any of the Exustar pedals?

    E-PM25Ti @ 210g pr
    Magnesium body, Titanium axle

Or the same design but with a stronger axle

There is a bit of a comparison between the Ti Exustar and 959's towards the end of this thread...

Nice Salsa , not much I can see to change that hasn't been mentioned. Maybe try out some lighter tire options if they suit your riding conditions.

That bike doesn't need to be improved, but...

Since you're already using latex in your tires, some tube-type Python MRC's would save you about 140 grams. I've had very good luck using Python Golds tubeless, even in rocky conditions.

You might know this already, but the release angle on the Eggbeaters can be reduced by switching the cleat with circles on it to the right shoe. If you tried that already, the Ritchey V4 Pro is listed at 277 grams and uses an spd cleat.

Leave the grips, leave the pedals, leave the stem. Make no sacrifice for durability on a ture mountain bike.
