    ok so how about a recommedation of a LIGHT WEIGHT LONG LASTING cassette....that was the whole point of my asking this question..

    XTR. Nothing lighter than that will last very long.

    XG-999
    and
    XTR-M970

    what would be the better choice between the two ?

    I have both and the XTR is by far smoother shifting, quieter and heavier by about 65gms. The XG-999 only seems to work well with SRAM chains, you're definitely going to have problems with the alloy 32T cog if you try to run a Shimano chain and will get the best results with the heftier SRAM chains. Can't say about KMC chains or other brands, but do not mix the XG-999 with the XTR Shimano chain.

    Congratulations, you have just identified mountain biking's biggest oxymoron! I believe a new company out of Canada called Bigfoot makes one.
