Grizzly Kills Mountain Biker Near Glacier National Park

    Sad news.
I guess it's good we only have black bears around hear and no grizzlies. I also hope the bears can hear my bear bell - even though I mostly got it to avoid startling hikers.

Aren't there Grizzlies in the North Cascades, with talk of more being relocated there?

There have been grizzlies in NE Washington for decades.

Black bears generally are more aggressive than grizzlies, and some of them get pretty big.

Caught this bad boy about a month ago on the camera pointing out the front window of my house in Woodinville. Don't think I would want to run into him on the trail.

Saw a mama and her cub across the street from my house in Sammamish last week. They were gone before I could get my camera. They are everywhere we ride.

Here's a bear in Tokul east on the road looking up from the bottom of Safety First. I went up the road thinking it would get scared and go into the bushes. It won the chicken battle with me, and I turned around and went around.

You have that backwards. Grizzlies are more aggressive and larger. Black bear's first defense is to run.

^^^ Absolutely. Black bears being "aggressive," period, is misinformation.

They are aggressive with the garbage cans on Snoqualmie Ridge.

Every black bear I've seen in the wild has run away, quickly, as soon as it realized I was near.

They're aggressive if you're carrying around a picnic basket on the back of your bike.

So are they going to do the "Florida/Disney" thing and kill every grizzly they see now?

Back in the day we got chased back up the Middle Fork for more than a mile by a very large black bear, and there were roughly six of us in a pack of bikers.

That bear was ornery and wasn't going to take anything for an answer.

I'm glad all y'all have had good experiences with bears (and what I describe is, IMHO, a good experience) but do not expect them to back off and run away, especially in the early spring when they are hungry, in late spring when they're in rut, and in the fall when they are getting ready for denning up.

The issue is that as Prof. Cree has said, is that a black bear is more likely to be habituated to people and grizzlies not.

But the other two black bears I've run into have all been of the "whoops, sorry, outahere!" variety, so I'm not sure that this debate is worth the ink.
