Sherando lake conditions after freeze and thaw?

Hey guys I was just riding in Northern VA (Fountainhead) and the trails are being destroyed by people riding them when they are crazy muddy from the trails thawing after being frozen for so long.

I was gonna head to Sherando and do the Torrey, slacks, and white rock gap descent and was wondering what people think the trail conditions would be like and if it is worth going.

Ive read on a thread that the trails able to take water well and still be in good condition but I was wondering how the freeze thaw cycle will effect the trails.

Sherando is rocky enough it shouldn't be too bad. The old school trails in that area tend to handle weather pretty well, it's the newer flow stuff that comes apart (narrowback, etc).

Trails up top will be fine, some of the lower stuff will be soupy. Would not recommend riding the jeep trail to top, that thing will be submerged in places and bring extra socks for after the creek crossings. I would speculate that you are going to get a bit wet going up Turkey Pen.

Some of my buddies rode up there on Saturday and reported that the bottom half of white rock was pretty soft. Torrey was still snow covered from the pictures I saw.

They should be fine for riding this weekend. They're were a few soft and snowy spots last Saturday.

Thanks guys! Rode today and it wasnít bad at all, ground is moist but packed and solid, nothing got on my tires. It was a little cold last night so Iím sure that helped.

White rock gap had small ruts from when it was softer but nothing bad. Conditions are best when itís colder in the morning but fine in the afternoon. Torrey and slacks were great too.

Trails have great drainage, was a blast!
