Usually rides: Trek 7000 in strange metallic yellow color
Can be found: XC riding in Middle Run, Iron Hill, Brandywine DE; Fair Hill, MD at least 3 times/ wk.
People I ride with: None from this board that I know of, but probably passed one of you on the trail. I'm usually with my race buddy- Randy
About me: I love long marathon rides. Any of you are invited to meet us at Fair Hill's Gallaher Rd. parking lot between 9 and 10 am on Sundays! I race during the season in Beginner Senior II. I first started mountain biking in 1988 when I bombed around on my Ross 10 speed mountain bike. My first REAL Mtn. Bk. was a 1992 Trek 7000. After a long hiatus, I reincarnated the '92 Trek and rebuilt it. Now I ride a 1998 Trek 7000 frame that I built with all new components this year, and what an improvement in geometry! I'm hoping to complete a full season next year and gauge a move to Sport class.

Here's a pic from the D&Q summer sizzler race this year.

Man, was I glad to meet them when they moved here this summer. Not only do I now have a REAL bike shop that doesn't involve a two hour round trip, they serve killer coffees to boot. You really should come up for a visit. I'm sure they wouldn't know who the heck "davis" is, but they would know me by my *real* name, Pat. Hope to meet you sometime.

Yeah!I plan on getting up there in the spring.I have'nt ridden in that area in about 8 1/2 years.I would make about 2-3 trips a summer to ride up at Snowshoe. Now I have some friends up there to show me the good stuff!I just got home from a ride here.62 degrees today! And,I was the only one on the trail!I try and look you up when I come up for a visit.I can't wait to see what they have done with the new shop.

Folks - I'm a total newbie to the sport, but am discovering that I love it. Would love to come across a group willing to take me under their wings and show me the ropes. In exchange, I can offer hours of witty banter, a charming accent that's fantastic for picking up women (and the ability to use it for pure evil, mwahaha) and the guy in the group who'll make you feel better about yourself no matter what your skill level is ('cause you'll still be better'n me!)

Yeah, stumbled upon the MORE site a few mins after I posted that. Good place to start!

You should come over to WV for the 2005 Slatyfork Shuffle. The riding is fantastic, the people are a hoot, and the moonshine whisky will make you forget anything else.

Howyeh Davis. I'd heartily recommend a trip for anyone on here. Aer (Cunny) Lingus are flying out of BWI into Shannon, and great deals can be had. Once there, staying in B&Bs is the only way to go. Much better than the hotels, cheaper too, and you get a savage feed of food in the morning - just right for mopping up the alcohol from the night before. Alright, my work for the Irish tourism board is over now.

As to the invite, thanks a million, I might take you up on that, depending on when it goes down. As I mentioned, I'm a total newbie though, so hopefully by the time it swings around I'd be able to keep up with all ye mad sorts. I'd avoid that corn stuff though - whiskey of any sort makes me all sorts of violent! And I'm like the Hulk - you wouldn't like me when I'm angry...

(Well, like the Hulk, if the Hulk was short, pale, had a shaved head, was a bit overweight, and not really that muscular.)

    Hey Gaz. Welcome.

I'm not sure if you want to be taken under the wing of some of us in the MORE group. We tend not to bathe that often and our underwings can be a source of infectious disease.

That said, it would be great to have you join in on some of our rides. This time of year is a little tough because the trails that are great for beginners are the same ones that get really muddy when wet. Conversely the trails that are rocky and in good shape to ride at this time of year are the ones that most folks just starting out ought not to be riding yet.

As the trails either dry out or freeze solid, you'll see more rides oriented towards beginners on easier trails in the area.

There are also a few of us that teach introductory clinics for new mountain bikers. My schedule was too unpredictable this last year for me to teach any of them, but my buddies Tom and Scott did get out and teach many groups this year. The MORE site will have info on that as we get closer to spring.

Again, welcome. We look forward to seeing you on the trails.

    Peter

Finally nailed down the new bike. 04 Marin Rift Zone frame, Rock Shox Psylo, Full XT drivetrain and crankset, and lots of WTB goodies. Custom built by the nice chaps at WTB in San Francisco. (So now you sort of get a photo.)

Does anyone read this thread anymore?

Late's almost as bad as never.

    Name: Kevin
    Live: Washington, DC
Rides: A black full rigid. No-name AL frame with a big ol' Surly fork. Has more gears than I know how to use.
Trails I ride: Almost everything at least once. I keep going back to Watershed, Seneca, Black Hill, Fairland, Schaeffer.
Other People From This Board I Ride With Regularly: None, but I know I've ridden with drevil a couple times on group rides. I only know that because of his bikes, though. I've ridden with TryAndStopMe once, too. Who knows who else I've seen on the trails.
Pic: The only carnage from my California vacation last summer, I managed to crash going uphill. The only riding photo that exists of me features my wrong end, which most people see only briefly before passing me.

Nice blog. I'll try to keep up. I remember that ride more because I was sick than anything else. I've never felt that gassed on that climb. I tried it again a couple weeks ago on a MORE ride, and was too weak to do it after 3 weeks off the bike.

Your mom sounds entertaining. An option: find a local MORE group ride. She'd probably be cool with that. She could even drop you at the trail head and meet the ride leader. Wait, if it was Peter, maybe she'd freak after all!

I've been riding since 1993, always in/around Baltimore and the areas north of it. For 3 years or so I took a break from riding entirely as my crappy cubicle bound tech job sapped my will to live and replaced it with a will to consume fast food. But hark, I'm back, and I'm waiting for my shiny new Specialized Rockhopper Pro Disc to show up (should be here in a day or two). I plan to puke a few times and generally get my fat ass back into shape. Hope at some point I'm not too ashamed to come riding with some of you this season.

Do street ride on your Rockhopper. Are you coming out on Sunday man? Sorry to hear about the mishap at Princeton. The Columbia store is pretty different from the Falls Road store. I think we are a little more laid back. Haha.

Yeah I ride the 'Hopper around on the street but don't do anything silly that I should be doing on a dirt jumping bike. But there's ledges and a few parking-lot step down to grass tranny hits in and around Towson that are fun to ride when I dont' feel like hoofin' it to the woods by myself.

I was thinking of getting a set of Maxxis Hookworms or Holy Rollers for these street days because I don't like the rolling resistance with knobbies. But either way, I think I just like to practice riding on urban ledges most of the time. Hoping to build the skills so I can start building skinny north shore stuff and riding it clean.

I dunno about Sunday. A couple of my buddies want to go ride Loch Raven and I'm dying to get back there and take some pics of the more advanced terrain. What time do you all head out? Sunday rides for us usually mean after 12 start because we're super hung over.

Yea true. Are the cops bad in Towson? I want to ride there.

Go for the Holy Rollers, the Hook Worms are HEAVYYY!.

Yea Sundays at 8 because we have to get back for work. When ever you can, come on out.

Towson's not too bad but I've only been up there a couple times to ride lately. I think on a mountain bike, even a play bike like a dirt jumper, you're stealthier as the cops tend to chase after skaters and bmx kids griding up stuff with pegs.

The only thing that worries me is that they put a police station right around the big courthouse where all the good ledges are.

    Hi TheProphet,

I've ridden Avalon one time...I think during my second year of riding in '97. I thoroughly enjoyed it at the time. It was a bit of a haul for me (I was living in Rockville at the time).

I typically work a six day week between the day job and playing in the band on the weekends. On my days off, I want to spend time with my family. I really don't have the time to venture too far from my home base in Damascus...but what a place to be base bound! I've got Schaeffer Farms, Hoyles Mill Connector, Black Hills, Little Bennett, Seneca Greenway and Seneca Creek State Park all less than 20 minutes driving time from my house. I'm only 0.6 mile from the Lower Magruder Spur of the Seneca Greenway...I can ride right from my driveway.

Still, I wouldn't mind going back to Avalon one day (or the McKeldin area).

Hello! I hope you don't mind me crashing in from the southeast. I noticed a lack of riders from Delaware though. I was born and raised in Newport, DE and learned to ride trail on BMX bike built up from junk parts at any place we could find dirt. With the money I spend on bikes now, I wonder how I ever got by as a kid.

I get back up to Newport about twice a year and head out to Middlerun/White Clay or Fair Hill to get my fix. Thankfully there's a shop in Newark that rents bikes.

Give a shout if you down my way. There's a ton of great trail in the southeast!

Me: Loren, tall guy, bike mechanic, father of two.
    Lives: Manassas, VA
Usually end up at Fountainhead or Wakefield, but prefer Elizabeth Furnace or Schaefer or something more fun.
Ppl I know from the forums: Pretty sure I've raced against Drevil a few times at wakefield.
Steeds: Just got a red Niner singlespeed and a Salsa Dos Niner. Used to ride a blue Rock Lobster single and a Fisher Mt Tam a lot. Might see me on my orange VooDoo cross bike or high tailing it to work thru luvly manassas on my avocado fixie, or any number of frankenbikes, too.
Things I do that are annoying: Complain about not getting to ride as much as I used to, fart a lot, too friendly/enthusiastic about riding and stuff when on the trail, constantly finding reasons to need another bike, large feet are a tripping hazard, too handsome.

Here's a really old pic of me that illustrates why 29ers are the bees knees for me.

Joey, was that first picture taken at the Appalachian Classic? Also, how are you liking your 29'er?

Oh yeah, I saw Davis this past weekend when I was in Marlinton for the pre-season training camp. He's just as ugly as ever, if not more so.

Moonrock Madness, Debauchery at Douthat and a few WVMBA Series Races ). Great bunch of
Folks no matter what Doug says.....
** Plans for 2007 : At age 52 soon, had the best year of my life on a mountain bike in 2006,
and hope to better that in 2007.

    Reason for edit : ** 2006 Updates

Outdoornut, after seeing the your pics, I'm thinking I may have seen you and your son once on Laurel Creek (aka Rimel) here in Pocahontas County. But I could be wrong. Ever ridden that?

We rode there last year in June for the first time, while camping at Watoga. There were a few trees down due to a pretty good storm a few weeks before. Was pretty nice except for the run in I had with a hiker who had two big a$$ dogs running free. One of them charged us and I came real close to busting a cap on the one as it got close. Didn't take long for his owner to call him back when he saw me draw my .45 and start taking aim.
Didn't know I could get that thing out of my pack so quick. We had a few words, he decided to put them on a leash instead of burrying one and went on our way. I remember passing a few other bikes that day. We didn't go back last year but I plan on hitting that one again this year. I've read that they are trying to clean it up some.

If it was us you may have been able to tell from my Sons bike easier. Haven't seen many around. He rides a Scott Racing 24 I just got him in June last year. He really likes that thing. It is so light he can usually leave me on many of the climbs.

Maybe we'll see ya over there this summer. We've already got a few weeks vacation planned over that way. Usually do vacations around Marlinton because it is so far to drive. We save the Davis / Canaan area for those one day or weekend trips. Both areas are well worth the drive.

I've talked two guys from work into getting back into mountain biking so I hope to drag their butts over there and show them why I'm over there so much. I've never done all the trails at Tea Creek but now that Scott is getting better on the technical sections our plans are to do them all this year. He handled Snowshoe very well last July so it's time.

GusTopher, I grew up in 'noke town and went to high school there. I've been living up in Charlottesville for about 5 years and recently bought a home in Waynesboro, VA. so I'm not too far away. The Cove was my stomping ground for many years and I miss it alot. I'd love to get up and ride there with you sometime if you are down. It's also been about 6 or 7 years since I rode at the explorer park, what is t like these days?

I don't think I've done this yet so I'll throw my info down....

n00b rider anxious to learn how to ride XC ans singletracks well. Still trying to figure out where to ride, but I do have access to a private trail that's about 4 miles and pretty challenging. Looking forward to modding the bike and exploring other nearby trails. Just hit me up anytime, would love to go riding in the area.

In the process of trying to build my own small course on my property. Have the paths, just need to build some jumps and stuff. Anyone want to check it out and give me advice, you're more than welcome!

If you are looking for a group to ride with, look in the VA forum for our Sunday rides that Princeton Sports puts on. Its a good way to meet new riders and enjoy what the park has to offer.

    Pleased to meet yous

Hi people! This is officially my first post, so please consider this a formal introduction
I'm still a "newb", so I'm anxious to yuk it up with you folks and learn some stuff. I rediscovered cycling last spring, and I've had an amazing time outdoors since doing so...don't really see myself slowing down any unless my leg falls off or something. Heh. Anyway--
This being the mid-atlantic sort of thread, I figure I'll be spending the most time around here.

Name: Aaron (or A.P. if you like)
    Live: Elkins, WV
Usually riding: silver '06 Trek 4900 disc w/ many upgrades
Trails most likely to see me: Nothing super challenging since I've only been doing this about 9 months...but I really enjoy the Camp 70 trails in Davis, Stonewall Jackson, and parts of Coopers Rock State Park. I get my daily fix on the Allegheny Highlands rail trail.
Other people from this board I ride with regularly? No one yet anyway...I ride solo since I don't have any friends on bikes...it'd be awesome to ride with a group though.
Pic: Not an "action" shot since I ride solo, but this is a misty July day in Canaan Valley, WV.

Hey everyone. Jason here. I live in Ona WV. I am new to the sport, and can't wait to get going. When I was a teen I got into it a bit, but not much. I bought my bike in January, and can't wait to hit the trails. I will mostly ride Barboursville Park, or Beech Fork. I will probably be solo, as I don't know anyone else into biking.

First of all Jason, welcome to the sport and to MTBR. I'm sure you will get hooked very
quickly as most on here did. There is some great riding no too far from you either.
Kanawha State Forest has some great trails. If you are just getting back into it then give
    Davis Creek Trail a go.

If you ever get up to the Parkersburg area check out Mountwood Park. There
are some extremely nice singletrack trails to be ridden there. Great place to learn before
hitting those more difficult / technical trails. If you decide to ride there let me know, there
is a link to a good map of Mountwood's trails.

Have fun and hope you find some locals to hook up with on the trails.

I'm an old new guy from Delaware. I walk a bunch of the local trails and the mb guys seemed to having a bunch of fun, so I figured 'why not?' I just bought a leftover Cannondale F300 last week and it only took me a few miles on the road to realize that walking trails is not adequate conditioning for biking! After some work hardening I hope to be hitting the trails this spring.

I live adjacent to Carousel Park and within a few miles of Middle Run and White Clay Creek; lots of great trails with a good mix of difficulty.

Always Riding- 2006 Haro Extreme 7

Trails most likely to see me or most likely not to see me...: A few weeks ago you would have seen me at the Shed, 495, Fountainhead, Franklin Farms, etc...Myself and two of my friends have started to build our own crazy stuff somewhere in NOVA on 50 acres. Mostly North Shore and Free Riding shizzle...not enough downhill to go to crazy with it. But we have some nice 30 foot skinny to 6-7 ft tranny's...you get the deal..

Other people from this board I ride with regularly
    : SODAK06,

When I'm not riding: I may be hunting, fishing, or building stuff to ride on...just pedaling fast downhill on trails doesn't thrill me...I love to push my boundries and see what I can do without hurting myself too much. I would say my "thing" would be skinnys'.....

Pic Below...just messing around with some hurting stuff at the Shed before we hit the other stuff

Riding a skinny down a tree...If I recall..I didn't stay on and went right...and ended up trying to cross the water which was about a foot and half deeper than I thought...Not fun on a cold day...

    And Lastly...My New Haro X7
Next i will build my Hardtail for riding around DC pissing off the yuppity yups...

Pics of the two guys I ride with SODAK06 and my other roommate Mikey.....They are riding a Fuji and a Dirtbag Transition

fakiep, is your seatpost extended past it's minimum insertion mark? looks really high. if it is it could bend both the post and the top of the seat tube of the frame. not much you can do for a frame once that happens.

Its a 19" and Im just over 6' tall. I kept going back and forth between the 19 and 21 but because I ride tight, technical singletrack almost exclusively, I went for the 19. I even looks uncomfortable to me when I look at those pics..LOL... but I like a real aggressive stance when I ride and It feels perfect when I ride.

We honestly i have only been there about 3 times and once to Pax. It has been good fun when I have been. I grew up in the woods of Pg County so it is realy nice to get out and scoot around the trails. Some of the up hill climbs out under the power lines kick my butt but that is half of the reason im doing this.

Very true. If you like powerline climbs, make a trip up to Patapsco State Park sometime, they have some good ones on the Baltimore side that just kick your butt.

First of all Xian welcome to the board and welcome back to the sport.
Is that the Germantown, MD between Boyds and Gathersburg?
I used to liver near Boyds as a kid.

If you ever get over into West Virginia to ride, shoot us a PM or post it up on the
WV board. I'm sure someone will be glad to show you some of the great trails
we have over here. I spend more time riding in the mountains than I do around
my home here in Western West Virginia.

Blyth, welcome to the board and to our shared passion. You live close to some
awesome riding and another of my favorite spots, Big Bear Lake near Hazelton, WV
right off I-68. There is some awesome riding there and just up the road from it at
Coopers Rock State Park. A ways south of you is Davis and Canaan Valley WV
which is another great place to ride. I know there are several places not too far
from Cumberland so get out there and ride, have fun and post some ride reports.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Seems there are plenty of places to ride locally, Im still getting used to the conversion from the 20" BMX'er. I feel so awkward and unbalanced riding the light and tight 20" compared to the Big heavy entry level Trek (820 ST). Just cant toss it around yet.

Not too many folks on here from W. MD, eh? I guess theyre all out riding.
