    Lake Needwood

Does anyone ever go to Lake Needwood in Rockville MD. Over the weekend I was hiking in an area there where there was a small forest fire. This is the first time I have gone thru an area where there was a forest fire. It was kinda cool, but also scarey and dirty with all the ashes. But it did expose some areas where there were some really nice rock gardens (if they were real trails they would compare nicely with some technical sections of gambril).

Does any one know anything about this fire, It only covered a small area (I am guessing it covered only 20-40 acres) it was mainly leaves and dry ground sticks and bushes that burned.

I don't know about the fire. I've got a buddy who works at Station 3 in Rockville, so I can probably ask him about it. I do know that there are some trails on the golf course side of the lake. They are wide and not very technical, but there are some serious climbs and descents. There is one climb up a utility easement that I only succeed in climbing once. There is also a trail that leads you out onto the old Southlawn Landfill.

The trail to the Southlawn Landfill is where the fire was

The trail that goes to the Southlawn Landfill is where the fire was. If you go on the trail and you see the ashes...You are there. You are right, there are some nice climbs out there, and they can be fun descents.

There is one trail the runs alongside the fence to the Landfill. There is a second trail that goes behind the dam and you can get to the Landfill that way.

I grew up not far from Needwood, so I went there a lot. When I bought my own condo down off Parklawn Drive, I used to ride to Needwood on the hiker/biker trail and then hit the backside trails.

Here is the blurb from the Post:

    Fire Covers 5 Secluded Acres

A fire in brush and woods consumed about five acres yesterday in a secluded part of Montgomery County, the county fire department said.

The fire broke out about 2 p.m. in the Lake Needwood area, and dozens of firefighters were still combating it hours later, Pete Piringer, a department spokesman, said.

He noted that the National Weather Service had issued a fire watch for yesterday because of brisk winds and dry conditions

...hard to believe that anywhere in Rockville is considered "secluded".
