    help in Richmond VA [OT]

OK this is not really biking related, but since I am biker who is planning to move to Richmond, does that help?

    Anyway, here are my questions:

    1. What are the names of and where are the different (housing) districts in and around Richmond? (Fan, Church Hill, Mechanicsville, Chesterfled, etc)

    2. I will be working at the Innsbrook Tech Center on Dominion Blvd. Is it possible to bike commute by bike from downtwon, the riverfront or Fan?

    3. Have you got any other suggestions for a young professional looking for a Dog and biker friendly apartment in Richmond?

    Thanks!

    Fist City!

Your best bet sounds like the fan: Plenty of apartment choices surrounded by similarly aged and like-minded people. Within the fan are a bunch of cool bodegas and unique restaurants. You can ride to the buttermilk trails from the fan as well.

However, plan on being robbed at one time or another. Everyone I know living in the fan has had an experience with either their car or house being broken into. Beats living in the "West End" though. That place is a sterile maze of subdivisions, malls, and franchises. If you value new and convenient more than flavor and uniqueness, its a good deal.

    Where are you moving from?

But seriously there are a lot of folks on there that can talk you in.

There's some pretty good riding around Richmond with some very good riding a short drive to the west.

You can definitely ride from the fan and it should not take that long. I work in that area as well at Capital One and I commute to work from Church Hill which is about 17 miles. The thing I would look at is what route you want to take. It took me about 4 or 5 different paths before I found the one I like but it is also nice to have other routes to fall back on. hope this helps a little bit

The fan is a pretty nice place to live if you like being able to walk or ride to a lot of parks, downtown, VCU and restaurants. I live in the fan myself and love it, I've been here going on 4 years now.

id say look for places around the museums just on the outskirts of the fan. usually you can find better landlords who arent into ripping off students. the places are bigger and better maintained, because they are in neighborhoods. also a quick ride down the boulevard puts you on the north bank trail.
