New question here. Fatbikes in VA/DC?

    Hello all,

Will be moving from Colorado Springs, CO to Annandale, VA in a month, and have an option to get a killer Borealis Fatbike for an amazing deal....but, I have no idea if I would even ride it out there! Current ride is a FS Stumpjumper, so I know I am covered with that. The air force is bringing my wife out, so we won't be there for ever (might be 1 year, could be 3!) so this isn't a forever assignment.

Thoughts? Though I have visited the DC area and spent a summer back in the 90s living in Arlington, I really have no idea about the riding around there and searching the forums didn't reveal much.

    Thanks in advance!

I live to the west a ways in West Virginia about 1.5hrs away from Annandale and my opinion is that a fatbike isn't needed or has a place here. Many would disagree but I feel that they are intended for snow/sand and we don't have much of either. The Stumpy will keep you happy at the various trails in northern Va.

Thanks - I kinda figured that, but having ridden a few here in the last few months they are fun bikes. I just wonder if I miss out on this deal if I will be kicking myself later - prob would if we end up back here or something after just a year! Hmm.

Well you would always kick yourself for not getting a bike when you have the money and a good deal. So better yet forget what I said! Ha

I just rode a borealis crestone with the 4.8's on it last night - near-full moon, sandy/rocky trail, and it was a dream. So much fun. Going to the shop tomorrow to see about some other options - I had a previous fun run on a 27.5 build with 3" tires. Hmm. We shall see what they have as more useful options.

All types of riding are within close distance, and lots of riders use fatbikes around here. An incomplete list: Fast wooded cross country trails (Rosaryville), buff flow trails with some punchy hills and tech (Fountainhead), big mountain backcountry loops (Shenendoah), and everything in between. I regularly see fatbikes killing it everywhere.

Thanks WillN, I decided to go for it - will be picking it up tomorrow and can get a couple good weeks of rides done out here before the bike goes on the moving truck!

Like WillN said, plenty of people riding fat bikes in the area. To the west of DC you'll get into chunky, technical riding in the Blue Ridge, which also tends to hold snow longer.
