Is this enough travel to handle the trails in VA?

It's all up to your skills level

Skills and certainly fitness will matter. I rode serious Monongahela rides in the early 90's rigid with flat pedals, and it was hard. Any FS takes the edge off during long rides. It's not the bike most times. It's the rider. Good Luck.

Thats quite a broad question. 100mm sounds like a good cross country bike. It could handle all the cross country trails in the world! so yes virginia too.
