    Shoulder strap braze-on Q

Nobody but this forum's readership will remember the 80's mtb's with frame mounts for a shoulder strap, so I thought this would be a good place to ask my question.

I did a search, and it looks like bikes like old Ritchey's and Mountain Goats had braze-on's under the top-tube and on the seat tube to accomodate a strap.

I'm currently spec'ing a custom off-road tourer (26" wheels), and have opportunity to spec this braze-on. But first, would like to learn more about the straps used, who made them or at least a pic or two of one.

I'd also like to know more about how the strap mounted to the braze-on, again so I may make my own if need be.

Thanks in advance for anything you can share.

i have several bikes with these straps. a couple of years ago i went to Jandd and had them reproduce the orignal straps that they made years ago. i still have a few although i need to find where they are.

A bunch of the Ross bikes were also specced with the bolt on strap. I seem to remember Jandd selling a velcro-attached strap besides the bolt-on ones. Used to have them in the bike shop I worked at in the 90's.

My cooks had the mounts. I found the jandd bag that I believe the cowboy was talking about. It was @ 10$ on ebay. The bag has an alloy frame in it. I cut the velcro off then drilled holes in the frame of the bag. Then I attached the bag to the frame from the inside. Worked great and hold some stuff too. Works great when I've had to portage the bike.

Does your builder know where to locate the braze-ons? If you're going to just make a strap it really isn't a big deal, but if you go with a pre-made Jandd, or other, bag/strap it can be important. I've seen a few bikes over the years with misplaced braze-ons and they didn't work well.

Also depending on the frame size you might loose your seattube waterbottle which is vastly more important on a touring bike.

Anybody into cyclocross should know about the straps since that is where the idea comes from.

Yeah, want to get my hands on one of the straps before requesting the braze - on. It's a big frame, and I definitely want to carry water on seat-tube, so need to make sure it will all fit. Still, I like the idea.

I don't think it came from cross... Pretty sure it's a mtb thing, but could be wrong.

It's a total MTB thing. I've got friends that have been CX racing back into the '50s and have never seen one on a CX bike, except in the occasional one during the '80s during the height of them being used on MTBs.

Naw, seriously? I remember seeing a few old cross bikes back when I worked in the shop that had strap braze-ons. The braze-ons were kind of different though, with one on the seat tube like an extra bottle braze-on and one on the right side of the down tube. The strap would be fastened to the seat tube, wrap over the top tube and then fasten to the down tube. Actually I recall seeing pictures on this forum of old cross bikes with same strap mounts. Or maybe just old mtn bikes, who knows.

Like I said there were a few, but it was a really short lived thing with the CXers and it was usually just an experiment. There were also a few touring bikes did have them during the time and may have been recruited into CX use. If it has waterbottle bosses before '99 it's most likely a touring bike turned CX. The idea is that a CX bike is stripped down with nothing that could get in the way or clog with mud.

Thanks, I have the same frame. Contacted Jandd and they are not doing any custom orders right now.

In the meantime Iíll try to fashion something out of leather.
