    Lye and titanium

I bring this question to y'all because you are the experts in the Great Seized Bolt War.

I have a mid-school titanium frame with aluminum removable dropouts and aluminum bolts. The bolts are seized and stripped. I've successfully removed a stuck AL seatpost from steel using lye so am wondering if I can do this with Aluminum stuck to Titanium, or will the lye react with titanium.

    Anyone know for sure?

Iron is safe but Ti is highly susceptible to damage from lye the same as aluminum. I definitely would try to figure something else out. Additionally, ti used in mountain bikes is typically 6Al-4V or 3Al-2.5V. The Al stands for aluminum which is what makes ti tubing soluble with gallium or in this case even more susceptible from damage from lye and other caustics.

Update just for future FYIs. I soaked over night in ammonia and that broke two of the AL bolts free since that goes after aluminum oxide. Discolored the AL hanger but not the Ti frame. The other two were hopeless so I drilled them out which ended up killing the hanger because it was impossible to get a straight angle on the bolts with my drill. Frame is unscathed.
