    Circa 1985 Ritchey Ascent Custom?

I picked this up locally and really thought it was just a production Ascent because of the color scheme but once I started really looking at it I noticed some discrepancies in the build that made me question that. The tig welds looked nicer than what I have seen, the rear dropout filing looks like some of the nicer Ritchey's, there is some fillet brazing done on the bottom bracket, and the serial number was hand stamped. The tubeset is also different than the norm and the 17" size wasn't available as a production frame yet. I sent a message to Ritchey, not really expecting a reply, but they said "Tom confirmed that he built it in his garage somewhere around 1984-85"

So the question is what do I call it? I currently have it up for sale since it is a 17" frame and too small for me (Anybody want to trade for a 19-20"? ) and have been calling it a Custom Ritchey Ascent, which is fairly accurate, but the Ascent tag might lead people to think it is lower quality, when in fact it is a nice handmade bike.

Any thoughts or info would be appreciated!

Why not just say hand Build by Tom in the USA?

Here's a 85 17" I bought off a recycling guy ten years ago. I don't remember the serial # but I registered it with the Ritchey site.

That looks like the headtube joints are all fillet brazed on that 85. What model frame is that?

Handbuilt by Tom? I'd ignore the pain in my back and call it "Preciousssssss"!

I've thought about it. If it were an inch bigger I could probably make it work.

Even as an "around town" bike with tall bars, you'd still be on a "Ritchey" Ritchey!

Donít call it something it isnít, non production, garage built by Tom, sounds better to me than a regular production anything.

IIRC, if a Ritchey has fillet brazing anywhere on the frame, Tom made it. Pre-tig'd front triangles made it faster for him, but he did the brazing, finish filing and alignment. Those bikes get the Hand Made sticker, usually on the seat tube.

Maybe on this one he didn't like the look of the weld there and said, "Lemme braze over that". That's an early enough bike, perhaps production details weren't finalized yet.
