Can I use "normal" brake cables?

Will regular/modern/not heavy duty brake cables cinch up safely on my BR-M730 cantis? I know I could try it but I'd rather know that someone has used the thinner stuff under hard use successfully.

I can't see even the smallest issue with that, no.

Cool. Thanks. I can move forward with my project. I over thunk the difference between 1.6mm and 1.8mm brake cables and how effectively they'd be clamped in place.

Yep, two plates can clamp, more or less, depending on how thick whatever's in between them, is.
