    '94 Kona Hot project

I'm in the process of rebuilding this very cherry Kona Hot. The hacked 1x9 gearing using an Origin8 SS crank definitely has to go.

I am torn between going with modern 1x11 gearing or keeping the gearing closer to it's 3x roots. I must say I have come to enjoy the simplicity and precise shifting of the 1x (Box Components w/RF Turbine cranks) conversion I did on an '07 Jamis Dragon. The Dragon climbs like a mountain cat and no slap or dropped chains.
My main dilemma for this Hot is with the aesthetics of most modern gear sets. I'm loving the White Industries ENO cranks but they are pricey! Should I just bite the bullet or find a decent vintage (silver) triple?
Please don't banish me for heresy, but 1x is a hot ticket.

I am going 1x on my old Balance AL-750, which I am sure will meet mixed feedback on here. For me it is my primary riding bike, I have a cheap 29er for riding with the family but if I am riding anything hard/technical, I'm on my Balance. If I had a whole garage full of bikes, including something new for a daily, I would have kept my Balance period correct. I don't see anything wrong with setting up your ride for however it best suits your needs, especially if it is your primary ride.

That Kona is... HOT! What size is it?
Here is what I'd do with it, keep the Origin8, and single speed it.
Disclosure: I've been dreaming of a retro Kona SS for a while now.

    Matti,
this is a 20 frame. Its way hilly in Pittsburgh and my 69 yr old body just aint up to SS😆. That Origin is a road crank and even with a 137mm BB, getting a good chain line with it is problematic. So Ive hacked an old XT triple to play around with until I can afford a a White Ind.
I think the best choice for a SS Kona would be a Unit or a Humuhumu.
