1986/1987 Trek 800 has a new lease on life!

Thought I'd share the 1986 or 1987 Trek 800 I rescued from the metal recycling bin at my local trash transfer station. It was complete when I found it in very good condition with minimal use. However, the wheels sucked and the 5 speed freewheel left a bit to be desired. I built fresh wheels with some older 36 hole Ultegra hubs I had (converted to a nutted axle with a Surly Fixer kit I had and re-spaced to ~128mm) and Rhyno Lite rims, installed a used SRAM 9 speed drivetrain from my parts bin and found some old bullmoose bars at the LBS for cheap, fresh cables, housing and brake pads. The cup and cone BB, cranks and chainrings, front derailleur, canti brakes and headset are original Then I had to get a new fork as the stock fork just barely cleared a 26x1.9 slick. It's super fun and I'm glad to have this for old skool riding. I'm planning to get some new and fatter tires. 26x2.3 would be ideal. Maybe a set of Compass Rat Trap Pass tires for dirt road adventure rides too.

The 800 was the lower end Trek at that time (still is), but it's certainly a quality steel frame that's bombproof and super fun to ride. It's far more stable than those mid-1990s MTBs I rode.....in the mid 1990's!

Anyone know if this is an '86 or '87?

I'm really enjoying riding this bike. My Kona Process 111 has been collecting dust lately. I did add some fresh new tires - what a difference.
