    XC Mtb Trip Advice

I am beginning to plan a week long trip to ride xc mtb trails this June on a 29er hardtail. We are planning to go to the black hills of SD and down to Boulder and Buffalo creek CO area or other towns near or west of Denver. Any ideas/opinions of the mtb trails in these areas?

Where will you begin your journey and where is your turnaround point?

We are starting in Rapid City, SD, and heading south through Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs which is our turnaround point. We wanted to go further west towards Breckenridge but are afraid the trails might be snow/wet still during the third week of may.

I think your plan to hit Buff Creek is a good one. One of my favorites. A recent episode of the Singletracks podcast addressed top trails in CO. In addition to the central CO rides, they also spend some time discussing front range trails. Colorado Springs was one of their highly rated areas. Check it out.

Spend a couple of days riding Buffalo Creek... you can do access it from either Boulder or COS (not a bad drive from both). It's amazing, and should be prime riding conditions in June. I just rode down there today and I absolutely love that area.

You could also do part of the CO Trail down there too- depending on what you're up for, do Segment 2 from the South Platte River over to Buffalo Creek and back (24 miles), or add a small loop in Buffalo Creek and then head back.

Around Boulder, I'd recommend Betasso Preserve- it's about 10 minutes up the canyon and is a super fun XC-type trail network. Centennial Cone in Golden (ride it from the Mayhem Gulch TH) is a great ride too, but don't bother on the weekend.
