    DH Park vacation ideas

    Hello everyone,

I have read through the forum, searched some on the web. What I am searching for is a DH Bike vacation spot (other than Whistler) that has a Village Square. I will be traveling with two non bike people, so restaurants, spas, etc. are all on agenda. I have been to Whistler's Village and the easiness of walking around and enjoying the destination is great.

    Can be California, Colorado, UT...

I googled village park maps at some locations, but the drawing does not always show the actual vibe or coolness of the destination, which is why I need some help.

    I thank you in advance!!

Park City, UT. Great town, free shuttles to top of mountain. Parks are no where near the caliber of Whistler but still fun.

    Mammoth Mountain CA.
There's free bus/trolley shuttles around town to various points of interest- views/lakes/hikes/etc.
There's always something going on at the village in summer- music, movies, festivals.
Plenty of drinking + dining options to keep people busy for a week.
You can cover many of the off mountain activities quickly, but you won't wear it out in 4-5days.
    Riding is great.

Park City is good too. More so for the non DH riding component of your group. You'd want to hit several of the PC lift served options to get your DH fix. Likely would need to hit both Canyons and Deer Valley to get enough riding in.

That's a tough one and you'll definitely have to give up something in the equation. I've skied or snowboarded all over the Western US & Canada so I know what I think are the awesome villages or towns. However, I haven't biked in as many places and don't do any riding I need a full face or armor for.

I **love** Whistler's village as well but like Main Street in Breckenridge, Lionshead Village in Vail and downtown Steamboat Springs better. I read nothing but great stuff about the riding in Steamboat & Vail but not sure how the DH scene is. I know nothing about the riding in Breckenridge/Summit County.

Winter Park has great DH riding but their village was lacking and the resort is kind of out there on it's own.

We have a condo in Park City and go there frequently. The riding is more XC than DH overall but The Canyons is trying to change that little by little. The town overall is great but Main St is now a bunch of trendy, boutique, uppity/snobby type shops. If that's what you seek, it may work.

We live in SoCal and both snowboard and MTB in Mammoth ever year. We had season passes for many years. It has GREAT DH riding options but their "village", while nice, is a complete joke compared to Whistler, Vail or the others mentioned. The town isn't much better for what it sounds like you're after.

I've only skied & snowboarded there but how about the Lake Tahoe area? I read about the great DH riding at Northstar all the time but not sure what the other 10+ resorts offer. I haven't seen the village there personally but it looks nice in photos. However, the Tahoe area offers endless options...hiking, kayaking, water skiing, boat tours, floating the Truckee river, legit casinos down at Stateline and cool areas like Truckee & thaw City to shop. Just over the hill is Carson City or better yet and always worth a stop...Virginia City .

I've been to Mammoth several times. If your non-bike people like other outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, SUP, fishing, etc. they will probably have a good time. My wife does not mtnb, but she actually had fun renting a bike and riding the dirt trail from the park down to town (95% down hill, and pretty easy to ride). We also went hiking up to the lakes and it was fun to bring our German Shepherd on the hikes and up the Gondola to the top. As for other things to do, Mammoth is definitely a small town. Things close early and there is not much to do at night. Restaurant choices are o.k. The chair-assisted runs and DH are great!

Hit up the east coast and just leave them in one of the towns while you drive to any of 12+ parks within a 5 hr radius.

Yeah, I was going to say Winter Park, but you're right, the ski village and the town are separated by several miles. I've gone to Winter Park during the Colorado Freeride Festival, so there are a lot of people at the ski village, and it would be good for visitors. But, I guess if you go during a non-event time, it might be pretty dead.

This website has a list of events. I think it's more fun to go to a mountain during an event. Usually there are still plenty of runs open, and there's more energy with everyone hanging out....
