    Winter moab riding

I searched to see if there were current posts about winter riding in moab and I didn't see any, so I apologize if my question is common or repetitive.

I am interested in a 2 week trip for Florida to moab for the dates of dec 24-jan 9th.

Seems it would be cheaper to drive and bring own bikes, but then I spend 6 days of car travel.....airfare, car rental, bike rental gets pricy.

My husband doesn't seem to think that mountain bike riding is possible in southern utah in winter months. We mountain biked in spain (alpujarras region of Sierra nevadas) during the same time a year ago. Wet condition to ruin trails, no. Cold weather, yes. It didn't stop us. We had a blast.

So we can handle cold weather riding but if there is snow, I'm not sure if the trip would be worth our time. Holiday rentals are very affordable at that time. But holiday guided rides aren't scheduled for winter months. So I figure we would create a self guided trip with plenty of research.

So is moab available dec-jean, for quality trail riding?

You'd be placing a big bet that you'd get good weather in Moab that time of year.
Could be freezing cold and snowed in.
The higher elevation trails will certainly be shut down.
However, some winters can be mild.

A much better destination to ride in Southern Utah during the winter is the St George area.
Logistically, it's also much easier to get to.
Fly to Las Vegas, rent a vehicle, and you are in St George in 2 hours.
Tons of riding right from town.
Also, Las Vegas can be an excellent winter destination as well-there's tons of single track around Vegas.
I'd recommend a Vegas + St George combo trip.

Then again, there is always Sedona.........

To agree with Norm Clydesdale, do NOT bet on Moab that time of year. Moab has two winters: an early winter in December and January that has become predictably bone chilling (read: temperature inversion) for weeks on end, and a late winter in February and March which is predictably spring-like. We are sometimes the coldest spot in the state of Utah in late December, thanks to the (non-particulate) inversion. St. George, as suggested, or Vegas are much better options. Sedona's deep winter riding potential blows Moab away. In fact, Denver is a much better option that time of year than we are.

St. George would be the way to go that time of year. Moab, not so much.
