The official 2014 'Is the Crest riedable yet' thread

Thought I'd start this up before a bunch of fragmented threads pop up.

I doubt it's ready yet, as there is still quite a bit of snow on the north facing stuff. But it is melting fast. I'm heading up to do a bit of maintenance on Scott's Bypass now. Will bring back a report of what I see.

Hunter's still had snowbanks as of a few days ago, and that's MUCH lower elevation... so I'm guessing another 3 weeks at least?

yep, definitely not ready yet. Still a few sloppy spots on Scott's, which means tons more up high.

Big Rack Shuttle posted photos of the Crest trail on their Facebook page yesterday. There are still some patches of snow on and above the trail. They're estimating that it will be good to go around June 20th.

Is Big Rack the only shuttle that will be shuttling the Crest this year? I was hoping for a later shuttle during the week.

I think so. The other one closed down after last season.

Big Rack Shuttle just posted that they are starting rides on Saturday. There are a few snow sections that you need to walk through, but they say everything else is really dry.

FYI - rode the Crest today. Crest is good. 2 or 3 spots of snow (one of which is worth being careful on unless you are solid on your handlebar self-arrest) but nothing awful, it's fun and good to go.

Pinecone is a different story - the last 3/4 mile or so is basically impassable with snowdrifts everywhere. You can bail up to the old ridgeline road to the south and make it a bit more rideable but it needs another couple weeks if you want to ride the whole thing/not get annoyed with the snow.

Rode the Crest Sunday. Again, few patches of snow here and there, but overall in excellent shape. If you plan on pedaling, I'd advise heading up via Shadow Lake Loop. Full ride report - The Wasatch Crest Trail | Park City Mountain Biking

supposedly it is snowing up there right now, and according to NOAA, it is going to continue through tomorrow, clearing up on thursday. I heard rumors around work of up to 8" accumulation by thursday, but then again I do work for a company that makes ski gear. But with the warm-ish temps up there, I'd imagine thursday will be a sloppy mess even with minimal accumulation. Maybe by Friday or Saturday it will have drained off a bit and give us some hero dirt to play in.

Yeah, it's pouring in PC right now. Have to assume it's nice wet snow up on the Crest. Assuming it warms up this week next weekend should be fine, though.

hopefully the new berm around that crooked aspen on the bypass holds up to the deluge. Took a long time to make, and I couldn't get the compaction I was hoping for with a shovel and feet.

Update: now snowing (mixed with rain, ugh) in Jeremy. I'm guessing the Crest is getting *pounded*.

Edit: Scratch the rain part. Snowing hard and accumulating. Even Round Valley/Glenwild/etc will be out of commission for a few days if this keeps up.

That's ok, we needed the moisture bad. Crest will be even better in a week or two!

It'll be better...if people are patient and don't rut it out.

Planning on hiking Mill D North Fork / Desolation Lake this weekend, anyone know how that part of the trail is? I realize it's not quite the same trail but connected to the Crest trail. I'm hoping it's mostly dried back out with the warmer weather we've had since the storm. Thanks!
