Mountain bike rider dies on Porcupine Rim

Always sad to read of an incident like this. No details at all, over a week later. Does anyone know what happened?

This says she fell about 3 feet. Sounds like some really bad luck.

How does someone die falling three feet? That is just like falling from your bike. I assume either that report was wrong or it was an incredibly high speed wreck or something.

Either way really tragic and sad

Given the terrain, could have struck the back of the head on a rock, or gone OTB on a drop and hit headfirst resulting in a TBI. There could always be underlying issues with the person as well, such as weakened arteries and one ruptured on impact. The remoteness and time till rescue crews arrive could be a factor, too. It's a bad deal no matter what happened.

There's always the remote possibility of no helmet, too. I saw a rider without one when I rode that trail in October, and they were getting scolded by pretty much every other rider that passed by.

3 feet in drop puts your head at about 8 feet. There's enough to do damage, but I bet there were some other factors as well.

I know from experience that you don't need to far fall to potentially die. I was rolling an 18 *INCH* dirt drop (so not a rock ledge) and my front wheel turned in soft dirt at the bottom of the drop. I went OTB and lawn darted. I was going so slow I have no idea how or why I didn't get my hands out to break the fall. Nonetheless, my helmet crushed in (5) spots and I fractured my C1 & C2. The spine specialist said that 80% of people with my injury are either dead or quadriplegics. Thankfully, I was one of the lucky 20%.

A hit to the chest in the wrong place has caused many fatalities. Heart stoppage is a possibility, even with a pretty small fall.

Cyclists have died from tearing an artery with relatively minor falls. Here one who luckily survived:

I fell off into a ravine once going less than walking speed (steep climb and I spun out on ice), and landed on the end of my handlebars, a drop of maybe three feet. I lacerated my liver, and some people die from that in minutes. I was in the ICU for a couple of days for observation because a liver bleed can be rapidly fatal.

It doesn't take a huge hit to kill someone.

    That's wild.

A friend's wife lacerated her liver in the same fashion riding on Gooseberry.

Don't get stabbed by your bars, folks.
