    Bobsled Report. 3-19-09

    I rode from City Creek up to Bobsled and down and I am happy to report that I found it completly rideable. There were 3 wet spots that I chose to walk around rather then leave ruts, and I would ask that you do the same. They are near the top of the trail after the two entrance trails meet. The Obstacle building gophers have been busy as well.

    I rode up dry creek yesterday...

    .... but out to Terrace Hills instead of down bobsled. There are some bad ruts in the shady sections. I hope they won't be made any worse. Walking is good, but in many of the spots I passed, just staying on the drier line would have been ok, too.

    Game on....

    The 'sled is way good to go. On 3/19 there were two spots on the climb (just past dog crap alley at the start, man... when the snow melts, it really is apparent there are some way irresponsible dog owners, mad props to those of you who clean up after your pooches). The trail itself is fine, only 3 spots with water, just before the wood stepup on the right. Anyway, it was ripping good fun and is actually getting dusty. Yeah, you heard right.... dusty. Go figure.

    Oh... my hat is off to the FLBS... you know who you are.... absolutely fun, fun stuff. Thanks for car #2, it was overdue.

    I was reading some about this trail recently on another website. Is Bobsled a trail that a light AM bike would fair well on? I'll be heading up to Salt Lake last week of May and I'm trying to compile my list of trails I want to hit with some friends along the way and within the Salt Lake/Tooele area. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Tooele is slim pickings

    and I doubt anything out there will be dry yet. There are 3 pretty good trails. The Dark Trail (Horseshit lane) Bear Trap, and White pine in middle canyon. There are some dirt roads and things, but its not exactly singletrack heaven out there.

    Bobsled is great for AM bikes. Personally I don't dig the obstacles and wonder why anyone would hike a 40lb bike to the top. The main trail is smooth and fast and and quick rolling xc bike tears it up. If you want to ride over the cars its another story.

    Anyway pretty much the whole North BST is good riding, and I know people are riding in the cornor canyon area I just don't get down there much to give you current conditions.

    You can ride bobsled on anything and have a ton of fun. You won't want to do some stuff on certain bikes but ride it with what you got!

    Folks have been busy in the bobsled. New stuff and maintenance on the existing stuff. Including car 1 and 2

There was also a small double being built before car #1. Pretty crazy section through there now but all over my level of riding so I can't comment on how they ride. Look like they are well built though.

    It's goooooooooooooood Didn't hit the second car gap yet but everything else is money. Hope to hit the second car gap soon.

    Rode with BY this morning and big thanks to the FLBS!!! I owe you guys some suds fo sure! New features are well designed and flow really well. Hitting all the features starting with the old car in succession is really nice and flowy. Like BY said, a little rain and everything will be even better What's really great is that the original trail is still in tact so none of the new stuff is mandatory....should allow everyone to live in harmony. And how about this weather...in march no less? who'd of thought? I'm hoping to get back up for another lap in the PM before the sun goes down.

    Who is hitting car #2?

    I am certainly no expert, but the lip on car #2 seems really steep, and the landing very short. Is anyone hitting this without severely brake checking before the jump?

    If so, please provide video.

    Credit where credit is due. For what it's worth, I understand the FLBS are NOT the crew that's been putting in the fun stuff on bobsled, although the FLBS did put in a nice little bench. If you happen to see the builders on the trail some day, stop and recognize.

    My bad....I "recognized" the builders the other day....I was unaware of who is a member of what Faction. Anyway, thanks to the guys I saw digging the other day and I chatted with for a while (whatever party you belong to). But thanks to the FLBS for the bench too .

    So many shovels. It's all so confusing.

    BTW- If you feel pretty comfortable on bobsled and want to live dangerously, throw on a pair of SB8 tires for extra excitement. The berms grip like glue, the gravel not so much. No sudden movements, if you know what I mean.

    The second car looks hairy.

    2nd car

    I hit the new line yesterday. It's good! The lip on the 2nd car throws you right over it. You don't need much speed. All the new stuff was awesome, but somebody dug out the lip on the step up. I didn't have any tools, or I would've fixed it.
    But whoever is doing all the work, thanks!

    New bike porn arrived in my mail box yesterday. Interesting piece with Reid ripping it on his 6 Point on some lush, euro trail. Inspiration while everything is re-drying out.

    Surely you jest......It was mostly the bike, I was merely a passenger.
    Either way, looks like that trail won't bee seeing much action for a while. That snow should do a decent job packing down landings and lips.
    As other poster said, car #2 is actually quite nice. Only "hairy" part is that the transition is short, and there is part of a berm really close to the landing. I'm not an expert by any means and only had 1 "incident" on it this weekend, the rest was gravy.

    Sorry if the credit was due others and not the FLBS.... Yeah, the bench is nice but chatting with the 'man' the other day out there I didn't ask the question if that was the right 'faction' or not. Just assumed. My bad.

    The plan as I heard was to move the gap between cars to be centered between them and on the left side (gap over the channel where water flows). It wasn't off by much in my estimation, just slightly closer to car 2? Nice that this stuff isn't messing with the original flow and those who savor it on their ultralight XC rigs can still do so. Of course some of us choose to have 6+ inches of travel on our XC rigs and still pedal them to the top....

    So I'll echo the "fun on any bike" comment and let the debate about the "most interesting tire to run" conversation continue!
