Another Hidden/Forgotten trail: Little Purgatory Trail in Leeds

Kept driving past leeds over the years wondering why there wasnt a trail system up there. Well there was....Happend to be playing around google Earth for awhile and noticed little foot trails all over the mesa leaving from peoples backyard, etc. I knew it would be in the red cliff desert reserve area and headed over to there website and found out there was indeed a trail out there. Only problem is there wasn't a lot of info on it. Actually, there isnt any info on it. Just a map. https://www.redcliffsdesertreserve.c...ps/Babylon.pdf Finally got out there and checked it out today. It was what I expected, a trail which looks to be cut in the last couple years from looking at different dates maps. Just hasn't seen a lot of traffic. A few faint foot prints and horse tracks. Looks like it sees horses once a week and foot traffic a couple times a month. Mostly at the bottem, heading towards the top there was only horse traffic. Heres some info, over 1500 feet of total climbing and just over 6.5 miles. when the trail was made, they didnt have mountain bikers in-mind. Riding counter clockwise helps keep the steep sections on the downhill but there is still a section that is hard to climb due to being a constant uphill section and negotiating parts of the trail. (1/4 mile) I just walked it. The trail was soft but if it started seeing bike traffic would become packed down and faster pace'd. I rode it clockwise . Didn't know anybetter and has to walk almost the whole climb as it switchbacks up the hill. So riding it counter clockwise would be advised...Anywho, super neat trail with killer views of the area. Trail was signed for mountain biking so its fully legal. Accessing the road wasn't too bad but I would recommend a higher clearance vehicle or, didnt need 4wd but there was a couple short sections of miner sand and rocks that might be a struggle for cars.

Map: Trail is in Red, some other pirate trails are in Blue, Another trail head option is in Green and road is Black

Getting there. From the I-15 exit in leeds from stg head north on Hwy 228(main road through leeds) once past leeds there is a signed label "Sand Cove" "historic Babylon" (900 n) turn right there. 3715'0.20"N 11320'33.34"W follow dirt road for 3.5 miles. you will descend down a hill and you will see a trailhead on the right. 3712'6.85"N 11320'55.78"W

    <a href="https://s671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/?action=view&amp;current=2011-01-24_15-20-10_593.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/2011-01-24_15-20-10_593.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Once in the gap look up to your left, there is petroglyphs up there.

    <a href="https://s671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/?action=view&amp;current=2011-01-24_15-16-42_53.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/2011-01-24_15-16-42_53.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The trail crosses a small creek that should be dry come cummer several times the first half mile. Not sure if the other trailhead would be a better option, its a half a mile up the road(you passed it driving in) labeled east reef trail. It is green on the map.

    <a href="https://s671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/?action=view&amp;current=2011-01-24_15-08-56_408.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/2011-01-24_15-08-56_408.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

    <a href="https://s671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/?action=view&amp;current=2011-01-24_15-13-33_392.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/2011-01-24_15-13-33_392.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

    <a href="https://s671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/?action=view&amp;current=2011-01-24_15-11-37_877.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/2011-01-24_15-11-37_877.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

At trail junction of historic babylon and little purgatory trail, stay right on trail, we will be returning via little purg. trail. Stay on historic babylon trail as it slowly climbs up the hill.

    <a href="https://s671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/?action=view&amp;current=2011-01-24_14-33-08_358.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv79/shelbymeink/2011-01-24_14-33-08_358.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Trail is sweepy and fun, just needs some "bike love".

Near the top, the trail has 360* views. Looking at Pine Valley

Looking down towards where we started from the top

At the top looking down into no mans land (little purgatory)

Another view looking toward Zion, you can see the trail in the background heading across the mesa

Descending, drop the seat and hang on. Pretty technical like zen. Lots of rocks to negotiant

    Slickrock section heading down

Technical area. Steep roll over. steps down about 4 feet. doesn't show in picture.

    Almost at the bottem

    Trail junction

Enjoy! I have a gpx file if needed

Saw ur bike tracks from earlier this week. Did u just ride the east reef trail over there? Its def. Not singlespeed friendly because of the constant grade. I was grannying it up

Here is the gpx file, not the full loop because I started it mid ride, wasnt sure where i was going and if/when i should start tracking. But will get you going the right way

    Rode it and enjoyed it.
I did it both ways just to see what was what and those switchbacks are a good hike ruined because you have to push your bike. (rigid SS talking)

Tuesday's my crunch day at school, though I do have some time between 1 and 4. How long of a ride is it? It'd be fun to finally meet the notorious fixie Dave for some new singletrack

Ouch, I just gave the original post another glance, tons of climbing but given the length I have to guess it's about an hour or so ride?

Rode the trail again today. Wow what a difference since bikers have been on it. Trail is packed down and 10x better then the first jaunt out there. It can only get better. It's seen lots of bike traffic.

    Put a video up too:

I rode from the east reef trailhead a half mile up the road. Missed the petroglyphs but was a lot easier to ride. Didn't have to deal with multiple creek crossings
