    Is this common practice?

Just brought home a Trek Fuel EX5 from the LBS. Trek website says its all SRAM X5 components, but mine has a shamano alivio front dreaileur on it. Is that common practice from Trek or did the LBS pull a switch so they can sell the X5 after the fact?

I don't think it's uncommon. Most manufacturers put some disclaimer that specifications are subject to change. Here's the one from the Trek site:

"We reserve the right to make changes to the product information contained on this site at any time without notice, including with respect to equipment, specifications, models, colors, and materials."

When I bought my 11 EX8 the website said it came with an XT rear Deraileur, bike actually came with SLX. Trek website was later amended to say it actually came with SLX rear Deraileur, but bike pic still showed XT. They change items all the time.

go check the other bikes of that model, see if they have the one you want. my guess is that its all the same and your LBS isn't trying to pull a fast one.
