Broke shifter on my '97 TREK 7000 zx, will any old shifter do?

Just pulled the back bike out for it's 2nd ride in about 3 years. All was going well until I did a quick downshift and something didn't feel right. 10 minutes later I noticed that I no longer had one of the shift levers for my rear derailer. I'm sure it's out there on the trail somewhere but it was 102 degrees and my riding partner and I were toast. I think it's an 8 speed rear cassette, I'll verify this before I order anything. I've checked on Ebay and there are no replacement rear shifters available.

If I'm changing to a different shifter I'll go ahead and do both sides since I really love this old bike and mismatching shifters would be unacceptable.

The question is, if it is indeed an 8 speed cassette, can I get any 8 speed shifter for the rear and a 3 speed shifter for the front and expect things to work o.k.? I'm wondering if there is a difference in distance between gears on different component sets thus causing the indexing to work incorrectly if I purchase the wrong shifters.

Forgot to add, the components are the original Shimano STX-RC. I know it's ancient but these components as well as the bike as a whole have been very reliable until today. I think the screw that holds the cover on the bottom side simply backed out. I overlooked it when prepping the bike to return to service.

I'm really impatient, lol, so I ordered this. It's amazon so returns are easy. Hope it works.

Pretty sure any shifter set would work.
Cycling is a good form of release, an escape from everyday tensions, and one hell of a fun ride.
