    Sequioa trail maintence problem...HELP

Sequoia National forest has some amazing MTB trails that are maintained and built with green sticker money (Cannel, Kern River trail, Just outstanding) but it might not be there for 2007 and the FS says they will close some trails that they cannot maintain.

    Here is the full deal.

SEQUOIA FOREST WILL NOT BE RECEIVING ANY GREEN STICKER TRAIL MONEY NEXT YEAR

Fortunately there is something powerful you can do about this:

Send the below Form Letter to the OHV Commission before 12/7/06 Please feel free to write a personal letter of your own, but SEND A LETTER

    Dear Commissioners,
I hope that you will re-evaluate the Sequoia Trail Maintenance Grant OR-2-SE-65 & Enforcement Grant OR-2-SE-64 & provide the much needed funding for next year. Sequoia has an excellent motorized trail systems & OHV users hope that these trails will be funded at past levels using the funds they contributed in Green Stickers & Gas Taxes. The OHV program has wisely invested approximately $250,000 in the Sequoia trails each year. We would hate to see that investment jeopardized because of a clerical error in the initial application. Nothing has changed on the ground. We still have a World Class Motorized trail system in need of OHV program funding.

I support the revised grant request as submitted by Sequoia Forest Recreation Manager Cheryl Bauer on 11/9. I also support the additional comments provided by Stewards of the Sequoia including reasons to increase the grant score based on grant criteria.

Thank you for your consideration in how you allocate the money I have contributed to the OHV trust fund.

    Sincerely,

    BACKGROUND
As you may have heard the Sequoia Forest Staff did not follow the grant criteria in their most recent Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation grant request.
In each of the past years Sequoia Forest has received approximately $250,000 dollars, which pays for the trail crew, OHV staff & all the other OHV program expenses.
Unfortunately next year none of the Green Sticker money that you paid will be going to your trails in Sequoia.
Stewards just met with the new District Ranger & asked if the Forest Service would be able to provide the $250,000 which was lost because of their own error. We were told that they do not have any money to spare. This could be especially problematic since we were also told that trails would be closed if there was not enough money to maintain them.

A Big thanks to all of you who contacted your legislators & Congressman Thomas asking them to support OHV funding

Since you already have an existing system of trails that seem to combine both motorized and non-motorized users, why don't you ask the land managers to look into RTP (restoration trail program) trail maintenance grants to provide continued funding. The are federal grants they are used to maintain existing trails and cannot be used for new construction. Funding cycles run two years at a time, I believe, and the requests usually have deadlines in the spring.

You should get in touch with Tom Ward at IMBA. He's their new California policy person.

ASHBURN, McCARTHY & McQUISTON SUPPORT $250,000 SEQUOIA TRAIL GRANT

Stewards have lobbied Senator Ashburn, Assemblyman McCarthy & Supervisor McQuiston to write letters to the OHV Commission encouraging them to fully fund the Sequoia trail grants next year. We are pleased to say that they have heeded our plea & have provided letters of support. With any luck the Commission will do their duty later this week & fund the Sequoia grants

Thanks to the over one hundred of you who have taken the time to submit the Stewards form letter to Commission. This will certainly help the cause.
If you have not submitted a letter yet please do so no later than 12/7
Please click on the link & do your part.
