Pinkbike Poll: Do You Ride Illegal Trails?

    Not build them, ride them.

The results of the Pinkbike poll show that out of 8329 people polled, 97% have ridden illegal trails. Only 271 riders said they never have ridden illegal trails (to the best of their knowledge) and never will.

    ls

271 - Absolutely not. Never have and never will.

134 - I have in the past but I won't do it again.

5634 - I have ridden some illegal trails and will continue to do so, although there's no heat on them.
    1266
1266 - I do sometimes ride illegal trails despite it being very clear that mountain bikes are not permitted on them, and I could even get in big trouble.
    1024
1024 - Most, if not all, of the trails I ride are 100% illegal but that doesn't stop me.

For my 2 cents. First I hate polls like this where the choices are wordy and the distinction between answers isn't clear. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th answers in some respects combine, which makes the spread between them nonsense. Then there is the work "illegal" which may be taken different ways by different people.

Personally, I mistakenly rode a posted closed trail recently. I was told in the past by an authoritative figure they were open to bikes, I asked because there were no signs at all. In entered the trail from a remote location away from the trail head. When I arrived at the trail head I saw the new signs. No bikes allowed. I won't do it again, but I've ridden this trail maybe 5 times. I suspect that the authoritative figure was wrong so I may have been on a closed trail all along. But it is a far cry from knowing the status of a random trail in a jurisdiction I am not familiar with that is not marked, vs riding past a sign.

I have my opinions about a poll like this, offered up by a bike oriented media outlet of sorts, being displayed in a public space. I'll just say I won't be answering that poll.

Just using the word 'illegal' shows either naivety or bias.

F'ing unbelievable. That has to be the stupidest poll I have seen. Way to go Pink Bike. Always a bastion of wonderful representation of our sport. I guess the daily roost videos aren't enough. Coming to an advocacy debate near you "Poll on popular mountain bike site says 98% of mountain bikers engage in illegal behavior"

    Great job, PinkBike.

Just in case mountain bike advocacy wasn't already a hard enough row to hoe, you just made it that much tougher.

I'm sure the local anti-MTB loudmouths won't use this against us at the next trail expansion meeting, though. Right? Right? No? Crap.
