    New IMBA Book Now Available

"Managing Mountain Biking: IMBA's Guide to Providing Great Riding"

    http://www.imba.com/resources/bike_m...ain_bikes.html

Written for professional land managers, volunteers, and recreation providers alike, this 256-page book offers an essential collection of best practices for planning, designing, and managing successful trail networks and bike parks.

More than 50 experts—including land managers, recreation ecologists, professional trailbuilders, and experienced advocates—contributed to "Managing Mountain Biking" creating the most complete reference of its kind. Strategies are clearly described with the aid of 270 color photos and 25 helpful illustrations; dozens of success stories from around the globe provide real-world examples of effective trail management.

This new book expands significantly on IMBA's popular 2004 book "Trail Solutions: IMBA's Guide to Building Sweet Singletrack." It breaks new ground with advice on overcoming user conflict, minimizing environmental impact, managing risk, and providing technically challenging riding. While "Trail Solutions" covered trail construction, "Managing Mountain Biking" focuses on solving mountain biking issues through innovative trail design, effective partnerships, and visitor management strategies.

The book is available exclusively through IMBA and costs $35. IMBA members receive a 10-percent discount and quantity discounts are available. Visit http://www.imba.com or call toll free 1-888-442-4622 to order.

I picked up a copy of this book at the Professional Trailbuilders Association annual conference in Reno earlier this month. I have to say that this is probably the most comprehensive reference a land manager could ask for in regard to managing mountain bike trails and their users.

The book is a great compliment to Sustainable Trails, IMBA's earlier publication on designing and building natural surface, multi-use, singletrack trails. Managing Mountain Biking shows the reader the steps to take to effectively manage the facilities in easy-to-understand verbiage and with simple diagrams and pictures and includes real life situations.

The book's multiple contributors pull together an amazing and varied amount of knowledge through actual situations that have been proven to work.

I recommend this book to all land managers who have any trail on their property, to trail stewards who work with land managers/owners, and to any mountain bike club as a great reference to add to its library. The publication is well worth the price.

page #74 is "our" IMBA rep, Mike Brixey of Eastern WA, and that is one of our trail projects at Riverside State Park in the background.

We got the original file from IMBA and had it professionally printed out and framed for him.
