Mercury News Op Ed and response

    MTBRs-

Came across a pretty negative MTB OpEd in the SJ Mercury News this past week. Maybe some of you saw it. Felt compelled to respond. Donít know if response will see the light of day but am sharing it here. Canít speak for all riders but hopefully captured sentiment of many.

Those pesky thrill bikers. Exclusivity smells bad especially on public land. Nice comment letter.

I tried to read that horrible article and had to stop. The insane bias and sheer lies the author was spouting was painful to read.

Your reply was excellent. Thanks for doing that.

    Your reply was really eloquent.

Not sure why the murky news felt the need to run that op-Ed. Thereís enough tension between user groups.

I only got about 3 lines into that article and had to quit when I read about the claimed environmental degradation to be caused by mountain bikes on trails used by equestrians.

Re: ďDonít allow bicycles on regionís existing hiking trailsĒ (Opinion section, Mercurynews.com, Jan. 23):

John Millerís recent makes the point that our local parks and open spaces are in danger of being overrun by mountain bikes and e-bikes, and that REI only supports these parks in order to sell more bikes.

These spaces are wonderful. The more people get out and use them, the better. They help connect people to nature and, given the climate change emergency we all face, we need more people to care about and protect the environment. I hike these trails frequently and I donít mind sharing with bike riders. I am also appreciative of REIís financial support of these spaces ó it is not the enemy.

The groups that manage our local parks and open spaces have a challenging job balancing natural preservation with access and education. I trust they will continue to strike the right balance.
