How do you translate 'multi-use trail'?

I have been asked to help translate some text into some other languages.

How do you say "There are 5 miles of multi-use trail" in Spanish or Chinese? The translators are having problems with this.

Does anyone here have an example of this? Or should I simply suggest "hiking and bicycling trails", which is what these particular trails are.

There may not be a direct translation, "hiking and bicycling trail" may be your best way to translate it (I dropped the plural since your original was singular). My wife is a translator for Mandarin and Japanese but I have the feeling she won't be able to do any better than that, and if there is a term for it, I bet it is pretty new and she would not know it.

多用途路徑 = Multipurpose path (traditional Chinese)

Sendero multipropůsito = Multipurpose trail (Spanish)

    Mehrzweck-Trail = Multi-purpose trail (German)

MILF parkway = multi-purpose trail (American English)

In case you've never read instructions for something that was built in a foreign county and translated into your native language, direct and literal translations are often meaningless. As stated above, go with specific uses. It may read strangely sometimes or there may be more elegant ways to say it, but at least you know it will make sense.

If a compact term doesn't exist in that language, you could create one and define it up front in the article, by way of a glossary or whatever. This may be less awkward than repeating "trail that is shared by bicyclists and pedestrians" over and over.

Also, you could try posting this question in one or more of the appropriate "Regional Bike Trails and Rides" subforums.

You just have two be careful with translations, there may be a term for "multi-use trail" but it may actually mean "trail for walking and meeting a gay partner for a quick rendezvous" or something else different than how you interpret it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I suggested using 'hiking and bicycling trails'. The phrase 'multi-use trail' is jargon, and probably few of the English readers are going to understand what it means.

Some of the above are probably inappropriate for a government document.... and even the plausible ones have few or no google search results, which suggests they are not likely to be understood.
