Erwin Park in McKinney, TX at risk

    Save Erwin Park in McKinney!!!

Alert from the Dallas Off Road Bicycling Association
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From McKinney Living Magazine (which I refer to as the Chamber's Money Mill).

"As a result, the city is working with consultants and McKinney residents to develop a master plan for future development and improvements at Erwin Park. The primary goals of the project are to protect vegetation and promote prarie reclamation along hike & bike trails; to offer a variety of facilities, programs and park areas to meet the recreational needs of a diverse population with various levels of ability and skill; to plan for the orderly replacement of aging park and recreational infrastructure to ensure existing recreational opportunities are not lost; to encourage the establishment of public/private partnerships to provide expanded indoor and outdoor recreational facilities; to provide a comprehensive system of pedestrian, bike and equestrian trails throughout the City of McKinney; and to encourage conservation of native habitat, wildlife, stream corridors and wooded areas to enrich the quality of life for McKinney's citizens.

Keeping these goals in mind, the group sees potential for environmental education, including horticultural displays and informative signage, and preservation and conservation of natural resources in the area. Some suggested changes will place limits on vehicle accessibility to areas of the park and some existing roadways will be reestablished as trails and natural habitat. Consultants and City staff have also recommended that Erwin's eight-mile mountain bike trail be phased out.

"The consultants found that there is a growing incompatibility of mountain bikers with the increasing numbers of pedestrians at the park", said Randolph (Lemuel Randolph, Dir. of Parks & Rec. in McKinney). "They concluded the potential for conflicts and safety issues make this a dangerous situation. In essence, in order to preserve the park for future users, some of the current users of the park must be changed."
Help save one of the most popular trails in DFW! Send e-mails to the city councilman if you've ever traveled to McKinney to ride this trail. Please keep your responses professional and clean.

We do know that if the plan is passed, the trail wouldn't be closed for several years, but the council has yet to even vote on the plan, and we want to stop this idea in its tracks. Thanks for your help.
