    Clearing steep sideslopes?

We're finding that corridor work is adding to the challenge of cutting bench on steep sideslopes... In other words, we're accustomed to clearing understory with a brush mower, and now we're slashing with machetes and chainsaws in an especially dense area... Is there a machine we can run to cut along steep slopes? Anyone have other advice for lightening the load? Bladed weedwackers?

Cutting eight miles of 30" deep bench is challenging enough...

Have you tried a Sthil gas powered hedge trimmer? They make one with an articulating head that is sorta like a hand held sickle bar mower. If that won't cut it, you're probably going to need to cut it off with pruners at knee to waist height and grub out the root ball during the bench process.

30% and 8 miles? What about a Ditchwitch?

I agree with fatirewilly.....the Stihl trimmer is great for lots of small stuff getting in the way. And it is a lot safer than rotating saw blades on a trimmer head.

Roger that! I read a gnarly accident report about two guys on a forestry crew somewhere working with a power pole saw type tool. the helper got on the wrong side of the sawyer, the head kicked back, and the blade cut into the helper's chest. The guy survived, but it was a near thing.
