    Painting me bike, any tips?

    Has anyone here ever paint their bike, frame or whatever?

    I've got a old steel rigid commuter MTB and:
    - what are the best brand/s, type of paints to use?
    - application method/s?
    - other forms of bike porn?
    - prep. for steel/alloy/other?
    - 'nude' frame?
    - the all important masking method?

    got pics?
    how to take care of 'spot-rusting'?

    I think it came out o.k.. It's an early 90's giant steel hardtail and had lots of rust spots where the paint was chipped away. Here's basically what I did:
    1. Stripped the paint competely using some citrus stuff I found at Lowe's.
    2. I then removed the rust with 220 grit sand paper.
    3. I then sanded the entire frame with 600 grit sand paper.
    4. Washed it with soap and water. Dried it.
    5. Applied primer (2 coats)
    6. Painted (3 coats).

    I got the primer and paint at an autobody paint supply store. The primer was a stock item and for the paint, I just flipped through one of their catalogs until I saw what I liked and they mixed it for me there (it came in a spray can). I basically just did what the shop employee told me to do as far as spraying (even strokes, many thin coats rather than one thick coat, etc.)

    I don't know if this was the best way to do this or not but it came out looking a hell of a lot better than it did before. I've since heard people say you don't have to strip the old paint off to the bear metal and I'll admit it was quite a pain to do this so next time I paint a frame, I might try that.

    The primer was about $10 bucks and the paint was about $14 if I remember correctly.

    As far as your masking question, You really should pull the headset and bb but you might be able to get away with just taping around them. Beware though, if you do this and some of the stripper gets on say your headset cups, it could take the finish off (if it's black).

    I did this a few years ago (before digital camera's) and has since sold the bike, but here is my tale in re-finishing a frame (steel hardtail-Mongoose)
    -Removed all parts, everything
    -Removed old paint with aircraft stripper (nasty stuff)
    -Sanded frame with fine grit sand paper
    -Applied 2 coats of primer (from hardware store)
    -Applied 4 coats of paint, from spray can (also from hardware store)-fire engine red, flat
    -Drew a few flames on paper, put masking tape over, cut out using razor, applied to head tube-so that flames went down the top and down tube.
    -Masked off all everything that wasn't flames
    -Applied 3 coats of paint (hardware store spray can) for the flames-high gloss white
    -Removed masking tape
    -Applied new shiney stickers from the bike shop
    -Applied 3 coats of clear coat (From hardware store, came in spray can)

    This took about a week and a half, but it was well worth it, I had a custom paint job on my rockin' hardtail!

    I think I might actually have to do this again, its sounds like so much fun!

    What is aircraft stripper and where can I get it from? I first set up a similar post to frame painting on the "General Discussion" section. And I found out about Gasket Remover which eats away anything that is not metal (ie. paint) http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=30964

    I've decided to do a nude frame polished up as best as humanly possible. After some thought here are my procedures to pimping up my boring steel rigid.
    1. Strip out all components to a bare frame.
    2. Use a chemical paint stripper to rid of all the paint and stickers. (Gasket remover or aircraft stripper, either one when I find one.)
    3. Sand away spots of rust (hopefully just mild surface rusting)
    4. Wipe clean with isopropyl alcohol to get reduce cross comtamination (Stripper residue and dirt).
    5. Using AUD$10 of buffing tools to fit my drill and AUD$14 of polishing compound (SSX, Green compound, mentions stainless steel), buff up the frame (probably take a day or two) to a near-mirror shine.

    6. Using the same technique as above, add detail to the sexy polished frame. Like "jonowee" on the bottom tube.
    7. Mask off critical areas, like the BB and headtube areas.
    8. 350g of "Clear, Top Coat, Touch-up paint" in spray can (will test on another metal object- shovel, to see the quality of the finish- how smooth and clear), AUD$13. (Will get more if needed). And spray coat after coat after coat (maybe 10, applied in increasing amounts from very light to normal amounts).
    9. Coat unpainted areas (BB, headtube, etc...) with some oil (inside tubes and stays as well), not releasing lube like WD-40.
    10. Wipe down again with isopropyl alcohol.
    11. Reassemble bike, back to normal or as a single speed.

    Where did I get the aircraft stripper?

    A friend had a can of it from his adventure in stripping the paint off his aluminum frame.
    I think he got it at a hardware store.
    Good luck, be sure to post some pics, maybe you could treat it as a how to?!!!

    I'll definately crank the digi cam up with pics of tools, before-&-after, frame only finished, bike put back together finished, step-by-step.

    Revive old bikes. Turn a Huffy into a...Klein. ;-)

    bead blast stripping

    My buddies bike was stolen from a bike shop while being repaired. The shop gave him an upgraded frame that was canary yellow. He hated the color so he bead-blasted every stitch of yellow paint off the thing. Took less than an hour from begining to end - no mess. It was an aluminum frame, but if your frame has rust, this will remove it also.

    Definitly the way to go! No chemicals for you or the environment. No clean up.

    The reason why I wanted to revive my old bike because it was a bit boring. I choose to do it myself because it's something fun to do and it's low cost.
    If I wanted to do the professionally done job, sure it will have a top finish, but the cost of stripping, polishing and powdercoating would be highish and I might as well get a new commuter bike.
    Sure as MTBikers we care about the enviroment but damnit... things happen. Not everyone has big bucks to splash out on pro projects that are done by someone else when we can have the fun and possibily misfortune.

    There's a guy in my town who will bead-blast a bike frame clean of all paint for $15USD in about 15 minutes. This is probably the same price as the chemical stripper. You'd still have to do everything else yourself.

    Just an option.

    Just did two bikes this weekend. One sworks HT for my girlfriend - she wanted it purple and a Advanced Carbon road bike (rebadged Krestal Talon).

    I bought everything from Advanced Autoparts. Duplicolor brand paint/prior/clear coat in the big cans.

    Aircraft striper - Again from Advance Auto - it has a green Airplane on it in a spray can. Cool stuff. Trust me wear eye protection. Strip the bike parts. And grease the BB threads and head tube

    Wet sand frame with 400 sand paper if some paint/decals remain if not then just wet sand with 600.
    Wipe with duplicolor tack cloth only use one side
    Primer - wet sand with 600

    Wipe with duplicolor tack cloth - other side
    Paint with color -lightly wet sand with 800 - gets rid of orange peal
    Wipe with duplicolor tack cloth - same side
    2nd coat - lightly wet sand with 800

    Wipe with new duplicolor tack cloth
    Clear coat - keep applying light coats in 30-60 min intervals until large can is empty.
    If you have any runs wet sand with 1500.
    After 5 days - wax. I skip this cause I cant wait 5 days......

    I did the same for the road bike but did not use a stripper - all hand sanded. It takes a lot of time but totally worth it.
