Advice on using clear coat on decals for matte carbon frame

I put some gloss black decals on a matte carbon frame (generic Chinese, no branding). If I use a matte clearcoat to help durability of the decal, will I need to do the whole frame? And will it look terrible with just the section around the decal clear coated?

Is there another option, like maybe using a small brush to paint the edge of the decal?

This forum says "DIY Projects" so hopefully this is the right place for this.

I'd say try an inconspicuous spot like under the BB or chainstay first to see how it turns out, chances are the level of matte-ness (is that a word?) will be different. I think best results would come from matte clearing the decal with some painter's tape around the decal so only the decal is affected. Good luck and post a pic when you're done.

    the level of matte-ness...

    That's a good word. I like it.

Yes, I believe this will be the issue if you choose to provide some spray sealant. Perhaps you will be content with just the new decals and no clear coat?

I do like the decals but the clearcoat helps the edges not tear. I'm going to try upstateSCrider's method.
