you are gonna have responses all over the place... it's important to know your budget, great racks cost a lot of money ~$500 for a 2 bike rack

the usual top picks are 1up and kuat nv but like said they are expensive but will last you pretty much forever

1up USA makes hitch cargo which accepts up to 2 bike add-ons. It is awesome bike rack, but you need to know exactly what you expect from carrier. IMHO, roof carriers are a better option.

I have the 2 bike version of this and they make a 4 place as well. Didn't really go out specifically looking at Yakima, Thule and other big hitter brands because I really didn't need other options or a multi sport 'system'. This here came in at least $100 less, (half the cost of the Yak).
The other brands mentioned are all good and I still have a lot of Yakima stuff as well. Just needed a simple set up for my sporty car. Seems heavy duty and works well.

Yes, the reach up on an SUV/CUV or taller vehicle is a serious pain. I have the Yak outfit for crossbars, top sport box and bike mount stuff but I'm glad the cross over is hers so I had an excuse to get the easier rack.
