Old Troll and Ogre Drivetrain Question

The 2014 Trolls and Ogres had a 9 speed FC-T551 26-36-48 Deore crankset, with a 12-36t HG-61 cassette shifted by an RD-591 Rear Derailleur with a SRAM PC-970 chain.

With those specs, they were exceeding the total capacity of the rear derailleur by one tooth. I am assuming the chain was 116 links, but does anyone know if there was anything special about the chain?

I want to use exactly the same set up, but with slightly different 9-speed components. Does anyone know if there was a shifting problem with the 2014 Trolls and Ogres and the 2015 Trolls?

They shifted fine, and Shimano's chain capacity is always underestimated. I've pushed 2-4T above their listed capacity many times on my bikes without issue. Of course this all depends on the rider not shifting into the big cog/big chainring combo.

Sold a large number of Ogre's & trolls in the LBS I worked at over the years & whilst I don't remember the exact spec of them, I also don't remember seeing ANY drive train issues due to pushing Shimano's tooth difference limits. So long as you aren't cross chaining across the extreme's too much I'd say you're golden imo....

    enjoy!

Thanks for the fast replies, I appreciate it. So glad to see that there is no problem with that set up. Does anyone still have one of those 9 speed 26-36-48 cranksets on their bike?

Nice bike! I would kill for one of those old green Ogre frames with 135mm rear spacing. The triple is for my Specialized AWOL, and it will make a bike very similar to an Ogre with narrow tire clearance. I have pretty much all of the components I need for a 1x9 urban bike; I just have to find a suitable frameset now.

Friend had an AWOL, he enjoyed touring on it whilst under his ownership. Seemed a solid steed indeed! Good luck in your search dude
